Yet another theory about the Halloween card symbol...
*FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY*

The "gullwing" symbol on the 10/27/70 Halloween card and envelope appears to be a combination of the Viking symbols for "God" and "Water".

The ancient Norse apparently used a pictographic alphabet in which symbols could be combined to form new, unique meanings.

I've always been skeptical about the "water connection" since there is surely plenty of water and water-related places around the Bay area where Z operated but perhaps this symbol represented Z adopting the identity of the "God of Water"? The symbol IS used as the return address for the Halloween card, where ordinary folks would include their own identities.

These symbols, of course, would be fairly esoteric but we do have a very controversial "SLA" letter in which Z MAY have demonstrated a knowledge of Norse language. The commentary by Gareth Penn about this on Jake Wark's site is rather interesting.

Then, of course, we have the symbol for Odin, the supreme God of pre-Christian Norse mythology/religion, who was "the God of art, culture, warfare and the Dead". The symbol is also apparently used as an emblem for followers of Norse religion, known as Asatruar.

The symbol can also be represented with extended arms and its relationship to astrology and the Zodiac has already been discussed here ad infinitum.

The above link indicates that the cross/circle symbol "appears in about 15 modern ideographic systems" in addition to the numerous religious, occult and ideological contexts. Z, as I imagine him, was likely well aware that his signature cross-hair symbol could be interpreted in a multitude of different ways.

I like the "God of Water" aspect and it's a good find, Deoxys. I'm trying to remember if this was discussed in the archives; all I can remember now is that it was thought to be an engineering or construction symbol. As one who believes that the SLA letter is genuine, I wonder if we are missing more Norse symbolism.

Hey guys,

I posted a whole thread of stuff under the original Halloween card discussion. Check it out!
Nobody commented on it so I kind of put it on the back burner. Its about the halloween cards rune like drawings and also the SLA letter. I also found info on Runecasting which is kind of like fourtune telling or Astrology. It uses a circle symbol and a cross like symbol simalar to Zodiac's By fire By Knife symbol. Check the links out. They still work.

I saw that, Scott, and considered putting the initial post here under that thread. Since it was more specific to the symbol in the Halloween card, I made it a new thread but if Tom wants to combine them, no problemo.

Perhaps there should be separate thread to discuss each of Z's symbols separately?
