In his November 9, 1969 letter to the Chronicle, Zodiac states that he uses airplane cement on his fingers as "fingertip guards" to obscure his fingerprints. I have a suspicion he may have discovered this method while he was sniffing glue. Any thoughts on this?

I can speak from experience of what I was doing at that time as a teenager but that was something teens were doing. I never knew or heard of any adults doing that back then and Zodaic must have been at least 25 years old or older at the time.
Of course I never knew any serial killers either so who knows.
He calls it aiplane cement too not glue so it doesn't sound like glue sniffers lingo to call it cement instead of glue.

I think it's more likely Zodiac was on meds, drank alot of alcohol, and smoked pot.--I don't think he was a glue sniffer.

Maybe he preferred building model cars instead of weaving baskets while being an out patient.

We've gone over this territory before, but I think it's unlikely that Zodiac was a substance abuser. His methods and his letters show too much control; too much restraint.

I agree. I don't think Z was a substance abuser.

Doesn't mean he didn't relax once in a while. I drink socially, for instance, and once in a very long while, I'll crack open a beer at home, though that is extremely rare. Z may have been similar in that regard.

I'm with Vallejo Dave, I think Z was on mental meds, loved alcohol and twisted up some doobwa in between.

If all of the letters can be attributed to him, I can't imagine him as having restraint and being a control freak. He mentions--The Exorcist, Blue Meannies, road races, buttons with slogans(Melvin eats blubber),The good times I had in Vallejo, let's give the blacks their quota, Who will play me in a movie, and many other quips. I picture him sitting around, stoned on joints and meds, writing this stuff.

I think at most he was a recreational user but no heavier than that. His "in control thing" would have been jeopordized otherwise. He was also old enough not to do something just because it was "cool", and I really don't believe he was very social, so he only did enough to make himself feel "in control".

V dave, the statement "The good times I had in Vallejo" sounds like Z may live somewhere other than Vallejo. Do you agree?

Hawk, to me it sounds like he is not a Vallejo native, but may have lived there for a while. Or that he lived in a town close to Vallejo.

I have a theory that he was a commuter, going from the Vallejo area to SF and back.

" The good times I had in Vallejo" sounds like a line in a Merle Haggard song.

The Times was the local paper in Vallejo, where part of Z's long cipher ended up in print. That was good. For Z anyway.

In my opinion, had Zodiac been a substance abuser and was during the commission of his crimes, the Lake Berryessa attack would probably have seen him merely absconding with the box of partially-used prophylactics instead of hog-tying and stabbing Bryan and Cecelia.
