In Robert Graysmith's book, Zodiac Unmasked, Graysmith mentions this letter dated July 19, 1978:

http://crimeshadows.com/news/2007/01/i-am-in-contr ol-of-all-things.htm

Is this a genuine Zodiac letter? Was this letter written by Graysmith or Toschi? Was it written by some prankster? If this letter is genuine, what information can be gleaned from it? Please provide supporting facts for any claims. Many of us would like to know the relevance, if any, this letter has to the Zodiac case.

Bunk. Sounds like a foreigner wrote it. It has nothing in common with any known Z letters.

Thanks for the thoughtful comments, guys. Once again, supporting facts are always good for reinforcing claims. Zodiac, after all, was not always consistent in his actions.

I am not necessarily in disagreement, but I am seeking some factual basis for the letters relevance or irrelevance.

One of very few, if any sent postmarked LA.

"I am the Zodiac.." as opposed to most genuine letters beginning with "This is the Zodiac speaking..."

No mispellings intentional or otherwise.

First typed (since it's hard to duplicate writing) since Bates.

All good points, Warren. These are all things that make it harder to accept as genuine Zodiac material.

Still, I don't think they are enough to rule it out. I believe some four years had passed since the last letter. People, even the worst of them, have a way of changing over time. Dennis Rader even had different means of creating his letters. Don't get me wrong, I'm not convinced this is a Zodiac communique. I'm just curious about the possibilities.

If Z's name is Wilson or Spaulding it could be on athletic gear.LOL It doesn't seem like a Z missive though the disputed April 24, 1978 letter uses the phrase "I am now in control of all things"

Other scuba gear brands: Nelson, Pirelli, Cressi, Smitz, Farallon, Nemrod, Horthill, Voit

The tape theme in the letter made me think that, regardless of the author, it contained a message of some sort. Then again, it could just be nonsense.

This one seems like a reach to me. Perfect spelling, no handwriting to compare and an incoherent message that, to me, doesn't sound at all like Z. Anything is possible but my guess would be that Graysmith only dug this one out of the closet because of the (nonsensical) reference to swim fins and scuba gear, which we all know ALA used in winning his diving gold medal in the Mexico City Olympics.

Tad, I was referring to the Wilson, Spaulding jest. I understood your meaning, and I found the connection interesting.

An anagram for the words "chess" and "tape" is "cheap sets."

Friction tape is often used on hockey sticks, heel to toe. Single sided cloth tape on the grip.

"athletic... scuba... fins..."

There is actually a variation of hockey called "underwater hockey". I am not aware of its history, only of its strange existence.

Just observations. Not implying Z is a hockey player.

I wonder if Graysmith's dim recollection of this supposed Z letter is where he came up with that talk-show quote about "Zodiac's game of chess," or words to that effect.

I can't help but wonder if Graysmith actually wrote the letter. It contains a number of elements that have nothing to do with the actual Zodiac, but seem to point to Arthur Allen.

Maybe Graysmith wanted people to make a link from "But maybe you play chess with me" i.e. - Arthur (King).
