Can someone please explain how this letter was/is connected to the Zodiac?

To my recollection, Stew, somebody at the San Fransisco Chronicle - probably letters editor Carol Fisher, who had read many of Zodiac's missives to the newspaper and was familiar with their content - noticed a resemblance between the handwriting on this letter and that on confirmed Zodiac letters, subsequently calling the authorities. Dave Toschi doubted its authencity, but submitted it to the FBI for analysis nonetheless. The FBI Laboratory examined the document and reported that although some of its characteristics were inconsistent with the writing on the bona fide Zodiac letters, they were not enough to eliminate Zodiac as the author of this note. The lab went on to state that similarities were noted that would indicate that the 'Red Phantom Letter' was probably prepared by Zodiac.

Here's something for you to chew on - had I been in California at the time instead of on the other side of the globe, I could very well have been nailed as the author if anybody who had a grudge against me decided to submit my name to the police. My handwriting is a very close match to what you see on the letter - I might just post a sample for all to view in future...

You're not the infamous Red Phantom Killer from Sydney, Australia are you?

Sorry to disappoint, Stew, but I don't hail from Australia, and I've never heard of the bloke.

Anyway, here are the exemplars I spoke of in my last post:

Feedback, anyone?
