What a tragedy. Why are homicide units in charge of the investigation?

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/5687558#

Lynn Swann continues his quest for PA Gov also.

The article said whenever there's a serious injury, it's policy to include homicide investigators. Whenever anyone not yet an adult is said to have suffered any kind of accident, via a 911 call, the cops will accompany or precede EMT be to the scene, and they should.

For an adult like Rothelesburger on a motorcycle, a homicide cop does seem unusual.

It is tragic, but he should have been wearing a helmet, just as people should wear seatbelts in cars. If his injuries keep him off the field by the time the games count, the Steeler's are not required to pay him, and they shouldn't. I wouldn't. Tragic but also stupid with a capital S.

I agree he ought to have been wearing a helmet, but I don't think the lack of a helmet was the proximate cause of the accident.

It was probably the condom, though, that saved his life.

Dave,

Do you believe that the Steelers are going to win it all again? They've got a better chance than my 'Skins have. Pittsburgh has a nice chance; they need to avoid having to play Denver AT Denver in the playoffs. The Bronco's always seem extremely tough at home in the regular season and that triples come playoff time.

George--I did until Big Ben got hurt. He will likely miss part, if not all of the season. The Steelers might wheel and deal for a big play quarterback. Remember though, Randle-El was a quarterback at Purdue.

I was sad to see Lavar Arrington is leaving the Skins.

Dave, I guess we won't know for a while but ESPN has a report up which has some medical authorities saying Ben should be able to play all or almost all of the season. That broken jaw is the biggest concern, I thought it would be, especially for a QB. So far, doctors seem optimistic and the surgery was successful.

Anyway, it'll be good to see. Steelers still have a stout defense and a very good running game and offensive line. If a different QB has to play two or three games, it may not matter too much. Very sound team there in Pittsburgh. I'm less familiar with the AFC, but it would appear that there is no dominant team, and the Steelers are one of the best. Indy keeps trying, but physical teams beat them in the playoffs. Patriots aren't what they were, Denver always seems to be in the picture, the trick is to avoid playoff games at Mile High.

Arrington will now be a holy terror with the Giants. His one weakness is playing in space, but with the Giants and behind one of their excellent starting DE's, expect to see him on many highlight films. The 'Skins have essentially given the Giants two outstanding starting LB's; Antonio Pierce and Arrington. Watch out for the Giants in the NFC. Seattle won't be back in the Super Bowl, IMO.

Before and after. Hopefully he will recover. Can you believe he is only 24, and signed a $42 million contract.

This is what comes of not wearing a helmet.

This week's special: Roethlisberger served open-faced.

That joke is somewhat in poor taste, but I couldn't resist. I actually like Big Ben a lot. He's one heck of a tough quarterback and seems to keep his nose clean, as it were. He's a model NFL player and the kind of person our youth should aspire to be.

I haven't ridden a motorcycle in years, but when I did I always wore a helmet. I understand that in certain states it's a matter of choice and personal freedom. However, it wasn't my own skills as a rider that I questioned, but rather the driving skills of those around me that compelled me to always wear one. Thank God that Big Ben is a strong and healthy young man; this very situation would have killed a lot of other motorcyclists in all probability.

A little rubbing compound and that bike would shine right up.

Remember, in ERs all over the country they are known as "donorcycles".

Big Ben appeared at Steeler's offices today wearing a Hood. Maybe he is reading the message board, or saw Ed in his Lake Berryessa outfit.

Scott, I liked your joke, btw.

George, how dumb of me? I didn't know Randle El was signed by the Redskins, or that he went to Indiana. He may be the catalyst that the Skins need. He's big time, and good. I miss the days of Sonny Jurgenson, Billy Kilmer and John Riggins. When the Skins had their training camp in Carlisle, PA in the 60's and 70's, they used to imbibe at a place called the Walnutbottom Inn. So did I !!!--former PA governor, Tom Ridge, was a bartender there!

My link to Big Ben has been erased. Take my word for it--He wore a Hood to meetings with the Steeler brass.

Can you believe the difference in facial features?--I hope he comes all the way back, and I am cautiously optimistic.

Big Ben got knocked out of the game today against the Falcons, from a full frontal helmet hit on his face mask. Remember last summer? You can see where his head must've hit the windshield twice.

He's practicing calling play signals because he correctly guessed that Rothlesberger's career was over and figured coach Cower's lack of confidence in Charlie Batch would result in an open call audition for starting QB of the Steeler's.
