Very sad and ironic. Killed by a sting ray, something we usually think of as way less dangerous than a crocodile! He was a great showman and his enthusiasm about his work and nature was a joy to behold. I will miss him. My heart goes out to his wife and kids.

Only the third known person to have ever been killed by a stingray in Austrailia.

Interesting Johno. I was getting ready for work this morning (9/5/06) and Fox News reported that 1500 people a year are injuried by a stingray but no recorded deaths. I thought that strange when they said that.

Maybe the 1500 with no deaths was just in the US, now that I think about it.

I cant believe with all the crazy ass stuff he did it was a freak stingray accident that killed him. I watched him give a black mamba a kiss on the nose like it was nothing then sit face to face with a spitting cobra, it spit in his face 4 times before he decided he should stop and get some antidote.

I read today on Yahoo that he pulled the barb out of his chest and thats when he passed out. I wonder if he had left the barb in if it wouldve helped control the bleeding and helped save his life.

Unfortunately hindsite is always 20/20

I always figured he'd be killed by a crocodile, not a stingray of all things.

Since it was filmed, the film might give his family financial independance for the rest of their lives. Goodbye Steve, friend--RIP.

The barb had a neuro toxin plus it was big. Leave it in or take it out, either way he was done for. I really miss him, so sad.

I was talking to my wife about the odds of him dieing like that. I likened the odds to getting struck by lighting while getting eatten by a shark.

And like Colette pointed out it was an unsurvivalable injury. Often it's best to leave an object where it is and have doctors remove it like many people who have survived an arrow or nail imbedded in their heads. That wouldn't work with an object stuck in your heart. Leaving it in you will bleed to death internally and taking it out can cause you to bleed to death and cause fatal damage to the heart. A toxic object and those toxins will feed directly into the heart and kill you. Even if he had a team of doctors on site and recieved immediate attention they wouldn't have been able to save him.
