Arthur Leigh Allen's Confession Message Board: Arthur Leigh Allen: Arthur Leigh Allen's Confession

By Classic (Classic) ( - on Wednesday, March 28, 2001 - 04:50 pm:

These questions are for Tom or anyone else who can shed some light.
1.The videotape VPD seized that was marked "Z" during the 1992 search, was it in the house in 1991?
2.Can it be established that it was made between the '91 search and Allen's death?
3.Is it true that Allen "mooned" the cops and denied he was z on the tape.
4.Before the '91 search when was the last time Allen had contact with VPD?
I have a theory, but want to nail down a few facts first. Thanks,Classic

VPD knows the answers, but they aren't telling. All they will say for sure is the video did not contain a confession.

If it was Allen's house during the 1991 search, I think they would have seized it.

I've heard VPD had a great deal of contact with Allen prior to 1991, however never a formal search.

Thanks Tom for the prompt response. I'll post my theory in a day or so.

Let me start this by saying that I am neither pro or anti ALA. I have no favorite suspect per se,but do have a strong suspicion as to z's occupation. There are alot of things to make ALA top the list so to speak but also some things that don't "feel" right. One of those things I have a theory about. It leans more on theory than facts, which I normally try to avoid, but I'll throw it out there.
The actions of ALA and the VPD after the '91 search bother me. After the search ALA really comes out from anonimity as far as the public at large with granting interviews etc. It's like that search really ticked him off. With the VPD taking a cherished heirloom (the zodiac watch) and not giving it back probably didn't help. So what does ALA do, but make a videotape to be found at the next search or upon his death. VPD wont say what is on the tape except that it doesn't have a confession. My theory is that due to ALA actions before his death and VPD's actions afterward I think ALA confessed that he WASN'T z, that he was just casting suspicion on himself and gave proof. My thought is that ALA thought it was a game and that by "91 the game was pretty much done except that VPD searches him. So ALA decides to tell the truth on tape to be found hopefully after he is gone. He knew he was not in good health. So VPD has all of this "evidence" from "91. They haven't bothered testing it. Why?They now know he isn't their man. But they can't come out and say that for 20 yrs. they were barking up the wrong tree. Why did ALA play with the cops? Who knows? Hatred, resentment, inflating his ego etc. Thats it. I wish I had more facts to back it up, but thats why its a theory. Looking forward to "consructive" responses. Classic

Classic, you need to read my updates regarding VPD and DNA testing. They attempted something with Allen in the late 1990s, and they are doing so again.

As far as an Arthur Leigh Allen confession goes, it ,in all likelyhood, would be a false one.I was very impressed with the finding of LEIGH at the bottom of the Exorcist letter i believe, because it isn't forced and the small g seems Zodiac-like, but i'm not excited by much else.Right from the beginning I think you can disqualify him because he lives in Vallejo. The Zodiac was a veeerrryyy careful killer.I dont think he would kill people in his own backyard so he would fall under the sweep of a police investigation. However if you believe Zodiacs first few attacks werent random then you could argue it. But I think a random attack would involve a careful serial killer putting distance between the murder site and himself.I also think Zodiacs ego, competence, and self-control would point away from someone who cant control their eating habits. And I would think a heavy set person might not feel comfortable designing a murder that requires escape by foot-lake B.,Stine.It seems as if Graysmith pushed real hard to make Zodiac heavy to fit Mr. Starr. He called him Robert Hall, rh, thats kinda shameless dont ya think.

Tom: I saw the post about the DNA testing. That didn't change my thinking for a couple of reasons.
I have never met or spoken with Lt. JoAnn West so these comments are not meant to be dispariging toward her in any way.
1. This would not be the first time the police have put out disinformation concerning this case.
2.It would look pretty suspicious to be doing DNA
testing and not include the prime suspect.
3.If ALA is going to be eliminated as a suspect the police would probably want to do it on their own terms so to speak.
4.It would be good, sound police work to test and be 100%sure that he wasn't the guy.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Saturday, March 31, 2001 - 11:55 am:

Scott, I don't think an especially "careful" killer would leave fingerprints, witnesses, surviving victims and footprints.

I think the evidence indicates Zodiac was very lucky.

In response that a serial killer would not kill in his own backyard because that would cast suspicion on himself. Well that is exactly what Ted Bundy did. When he lived in Washington, most of his victims were in close proximity to his house. Same for Jeffery Dahmer- Same for Wayne Gacy and on and on. Bruce D.

Someone, somewhere in these msg boards indicated that VPD had handwriting samples of ALA and could not make a positive connection between the Zodiac letters and ALA., or as a minimum VPD screwed up the hand writing comparison check..............Be that as it may, there may be a simple but arduous way to prove whether or not ALA is indeed Z.............. In the Arthur Leigh Allen file there is a chronology of what is known of ALA locations, from the time of birth to time of death............ Some of these locations include working as a teacher and other jobs............... It may well be that when ALA applied for a position of work he filled out an application............... Would it be possible to get copies of these applications (or anything that ALA may have written)???.........If so, a simple check and comparison of the lower case "d" could prove whether or not ALA was Z.................... In all of the Z letters I have read, the lower case "d" is unique and repetitive in structure..............Penser

Allen has a similar "d" to does Ted Kaczynski, for that does O'Hare.......................................................................this is fun.........................................................................................

Penser-We already went over that d business(see posts on subject finder)-it simply is not true that Zodiac's d's were always repetitive nor were those three stick k's.I have been going over Z's letters since 1987 and I do see variations. Go through all the letters again and you will see this is true ...................H..o..w...a...r....d. Tom, I see what you m...e...a..n..........!!!!!!!!!

My "backyard" reference was dircTed more at pointing out that Vallejo is a small town. Those other guys were big city but also Bundy and Gacy were execuTed,Dahmer killed in prison while serving life.I consider Zodiac to be unique.Sure he was lucky to walk by those cops as he did but i think all serial killers realize than can reduce but not eliminate the risks of capture. I think Zodiac killed out of anger, and frustration for not having female companionship and used the killings for publicity and to intimidate society.i think the killings were random, and i just can't imagine Zodiac living in Vallejo and deciding to pick, of all places, his own little hometown to randomly act. Of course this isn't definite evidence but just something else against Mr. Allen. I think it is interesting the psychic picked Berkeley as Zodiacs home.I don't believe in psychics but i believe they develop detective skills thru experience.Maybe he picked Berkeley from hippie references in the letters but he may have chosen it thru the same kind of reasoning i've used.

Tom:If you agree that Z's lower case "d" is somewhat unique, then the Riverside Desk-Top Poem cannot be attributed to Zodiac. If that poem is related to or refers to the Bates murder, then the murder cannot be Zodiac's handywork. Ergo, the "Bates letter" is a hoax!!I believe the VPD and the FBI and the SFPD and whoever have made handwriting comparisons of Zodiac versus ALA (and perhaps other suspects). Even with large samples of Z's writing/letters, they have not been able to make comparisons with certainty. On the contrary, I believe they have made comparisons and are certain they do not have a match! My conclusion .... The perp responsible for the Zodiac killings is yet to be identified!

Again, I type in coherent sentences and paragraph structure, but it is posted as one long paragraph. Sorry about that. (That is why I wass using (......) in an effort to make whatever I have written more readable!!)

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Tuesday, April 03, 2001 - 02:27 am:

Zodiac's "d" is not unique, IMHO. I know of many people who always write a cursive "d."

However, Zodiac's "g" is looks like a backwards "p."
