Howard,Re-our discussion on PH
I have been trying to do some research on this name.It is as we suspected of German origin. To the best of my knowledge it has no english translation.I have searched through the computer and spoke to German friends. What makes it most interesting,in relation to this case,is it's uniqueness.Ther are not many listings for Hautz.
If this was a genuine person you would imagine it would have been easy enough to trace at the time.
There are "anagram sites" on the web that throw up
very interesting alternatives, but I was afraid of getting side-tracked.I did however find one interesting association but I do not know whether there is a connection or if it belongs under EdN's
"Zynchronosity thread".I probably misspelled that.

Does anyone have an opinion on this letter?.Do you believe it is a Z message?Does anyone have an opinion on the unusual name?

The writer of the Hautz letter placed punctuation inside of quote marks, while the author of the typewritten letter placed the punctuation on the outside.

Thanks for the reply,I see what you mean.So as a matter of interest, what's your best "educated guess" on this letter?

I've always wondered if it was in fact a student that used an alias to avoid becoming a suspect or didn't want to use their true name out of fear.

Either way,Iam interested in the choice of name.
It is unusual!.

I might also add that the writer of the Hautz letter did display good gramatical knowledge in the presentation of the "?" INSIDE the quotation in the context of the message. There are rules that determine proper punctuation when dealing with quotation marks. The writer of the Confession letter made a gramatical mistake with in placing the period outside the quotation mark (and also forgot an appropriate question mark, I might add). In the Hautz letter, the question mark, in this instance, was correctly placed inside the quotation (normally they go outside quotations).

Bruce-That's the prob' in dealing with Zs writing. In one place he follows correct grammar spelling/punctuation and in other places he goes south. I have gone through his letters to look for this trait and I hope to write a paper on it.I think the 66' writer was emotionally charged and maybe on something, but if he did the HautZ letter, there would have been several months for a melt down and he would try and make this letter correct as "she" is a "student". I believe Z was following anti-detection books of the 60s',which taught you to alter you're writing style making sure you would spell correctly and observe grammatical rules in one place ,and then go afoul in other places; so that when your 'normal' writing is checked against the suspect's missive you come out clean jeans-ya just do not match!Maybe "Patricia" had this in mind!Z slid notes in the mail under other names like the CitiZen letter and the Valentine note, etc.Maybe he is a "fellow student" here and wants the "public" to focus on the "boy" who went astray! It's all very interesting-your post was good though,u mey bee ritee onn! A Fellow Poster P.S. I note the 'one year anniversary' of her note -Z would have loved her for it-or would it have been self love?

By Esau (Esau) ( - on Saturday, January 27, 2001 - 04:19 am:

Howard, Valentine note? I don't think that I've heard of that. Please elaborate.

By Howard (Howard) ( - on Sunday, January 28, 2001 - 01:12 pm:

Esau-Yes, Z sent a note to chronicle 2/14/74'. I got my copy from Peterson.I have a copy of the note/"Valentine"in my give what I think is the real reason for the note in my book. This is the only missive that Zodiac sent that references a current event directly. I think that the Exorcist note- and that's what Z calls it,indirectly refers to the Zebra killings that were in initiated in S.F..Even Toshci thought that the killings-the murder of whites by blacks -'smoked' Z out and caused him to write.See Grays' book index under Zebra killings/Exorcist letter.Of course, with my Manson connection I see the connect' Z made to black Muslims killing whites. "The heavy dudes are the Muslims ...they'll bring the sh.. down(revolution)...Yeah, it's going to come down hard...a full on war.And when it does ,we're gonna be glad we're out here and out there[Death Valley-great garden spot!]...the smart ones will be the Muslims ,cause' while the sh..s coming down they'll be hiding in their basements[Z mentioned his so called basement where his death machine was stored, at one point]with all kinds of weapons and strategies, and when the time is right they'll come out and finish off what's left of whitey"said Manson/Davis.I think this mind set is what brought Z out ,with a note ,after about 3 years of SILENCE-he thought IT was "comin' down"(in my view). The 'Valentine' references the SLA ,a BLACK LED radical group that had just kidnapped Patti HEARst-a "rich piggie's daughter"-just the kind of thing Manson predicted before the War comes down between blacks and whites, but eventually encompassing the "pigs"or police and the "rest of society';it was to start in S.F.!This is where the V note differs from the E note-it'uses the term SLA as a point of reference to an event.I know Z referred to a police station that was bombed, but this has a tone all it's own as he tries to define a "NORSE"word(Manson/ Davis spoke of the Norse and their desirable racial characteristics/pagan religion, etc. in the same way Hitler, Ms idol; spoke of the Norse or ARYAN races. Manson and his leftovers at this time(74') were hoping this group would help start the War-they wrote and spoke of the SLA,etc.with this in mind.

That's good, my searches revealed nothing except that there was a John Hautz who lived in Riverside, and a Patricia Hautz in Iowa in the 60's. Tom, hate to sound like an idiot, but where are the cities in the article?

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Monday, January 05, 2004 - 01:17 pm:

They were living in Pennsylvania. Richard died in 1978 and Grace died in 2000.
