Possible Bay Area Zodiac Conference in 2001

Zodiackiller.com Message Board: General Zodiac Discussion: Possible Bay Area Zodiac Conference in 2001

By Jake Wark (Jake) (spider-tj022.proxy.aol.com - 152.163.213.182) on Sunday, December 17, 2000 - 01:14 pm:

The idea of a California Zodiac conference has been floated, and I'm curious as to how many people might be interested, and if anyone has any suggestions on getting the ball rolling. There's been some talk about possible panelists, too, people who have written about the case or investigated it, but the chances of them appearing are really kind of slim. In fact, there's only one guy, a reporter, who would definitely show.

So, any takers? I could sure use a nice west coast vacation. Any lurkers, please feel free to email me privately.

Ed Rust agreed to appear, and that means Harvey Hines and Kathleen Johns would likely be there, too.
Ken Narlow told me that as long as law enforcement is participating in some capacity, he would be involved.
That's a pretty good start. Now if only the heavy-hitters like Harry Martin would come...

I'll be there, and I would hope that Jake, Ed, Doug and others would go if they are able, as I would like to meet them all in person.

If Graysmith did decide to show that would be fine, but only if we are allowed to bring fruit and vegetables, and he promises to hold still... (no smiley face 'cause Edward don't like 'em...)

I'll be there, Con or no Con. In the event that this thing takes off, though, I should point out the obvious, which is that it will cost money to rent out a hall, unless the Vallejo Elks want to put us up for free...

I've been told he visits my site, but I don't know if he enters the message board area. You've got to be extra brave to venture in here.

I've read his book, MindHunter. He's no wuss...

I've read all his books, and I agree. But he's a businessman now, and he's got a TV show in the works. It would cost a mint to get him, and he already published his thoughts on the case, anyway. See his new book.

Yeah, I always get a good laugh from the posts that arrogantly imply John Douglas "doesn't know squat"! Personally, I've been quite impressed with his material.

John Douglas' chapter on the Zodiac in his new book is hardly reliable, and it seems clear that he didn't check the facts before repeating several inaccurate claims regarding Allen. He may have been a good profiler, and I have enjoyed reading some of his books, but his chapter on the Zodiac was less than accurate, let alone satisfying. Just my opinion...

Personally, I found his behavior concerning the Ramsey case to be rather questionable, if not disturbing.

To the best of my knowledge, only one person on this board is rather fond of bashing Douglas, and has made a habit of mocking him and ridiculing his work. That person frequently refers to Douglas' books as paperweights.

By Tom Voigt (Tomvoigt) (ac8a517f.ipt.aol.com - 172.138.81.127) on Sunday, December 24, 2000 - 12:45 am:

Gregorypraxas:
"To the best of my knowledge, only one person on this board is rather fond of bashing Douglas, and has made a habit of mocking him and ridiculing his work. That person frequently refers to Douglas' books as paperweights."

I did a keyword search on this board and found only ONE reference to the word "paperweights." One reference hardly qualifies as a frequent occurrence.
Hey, wait a minute! I thought I was the one that spews "lies, exaggerations and more."
Although he will never admit it, Gregorypraxas is the world's biggest hypocrite. It was just proven, although I'm sure he'll have an excuse.

John Douglas' first book was an inspired work. His efforts since then have been extremely lame, IMHO.
However, that's not meant as a dig at his bravado or profiling ability.

By Realtor (Realtor) (1cust251.tnt20.hou3.da.uu.net - 63.29.198.251) on Sunday, December 24, 2000 - 08:14 am:

Jake:

Please go a bit further in posing your question about cashing in on the Ramseys. That they wanted to hire someone of his caliber to help find their daughter's killer, and he consented, does not seem to me to be "cashing in."

Realtor

PS to Tom: John Douglas would probably enjoy being a part of a conference on Z...it would help with book promos...and those who find inaccuracies with his treatment of Z's case could discuss it with him face to face.

By Jake Wark (Jake) (spider-wg022.proxy.aol.com - 205.188.196.27) on Sunday, December 24, 2000 - 11:07 am:

My question was rhetorical, but I'll point out that JD cut his teeth catching the sort of people who killed JonBenet. By JD's own account, murders like hers are almost uniformly comitted by the parents.

For JD to attach himself for profit to these parents, who have manifested such an unwillingness to cooperate with law enforcement, damages his integrity in my eyes. It's no better than Cochran, Bailey, et al, but it's been overlooked in True Crime circles because of Douglas' cult of personality.

By Gregorypraxas (Gregorypraxas) (spider-tr071.proxy.aol.com - 152.163.201.206) on Sunday, December 24, 2000 - 12:35 pm:

"Although he will never admit it, Gregorypraxas is the world's biggest hypocrite. It was just proven, although I'm sure he'll have an excuse."

Tom, give us a break. You may think I am a hypocrite, and that's your right, but to call me the world's biggest is to exaggerate the facts, and overlook your own hypocrisy. You've topped us all with your double standards. And, I was not simply referring to your comments on the board, but to me as well. No hypocrisy there, and no excuses, so, again, we see your tendency to exaggerate, and it is clear that you're just looking for excuses to insult people who say things you don't want to hear.

You have called Douglas' book paperweights many times in our discussions, and you have been anything but respectful of Douglas his work in those discussions and on your board (old and new). So, you're simply WRONG when you call me a hypocrite, and if you can demonstrate ONE instance where I have been "the world's biggest hypocrite" please do so.

You need to grow up and stop resorting to petty insults when you don't want to deal with the issues.

By Tom Voigt (Tomvoigt) (ac9ee4d7.ipt.aol.com - 172.158.228.215) on Sunday, December 24, 2000 - 01:27 pm:

You're right; so sorry.
You aren't the WORLD'S biggest hypocrite, but you are the biggest on this board.

I've never discussed Douglas' books being "paperweights" with you.

By Sandy (Sandy) (c531918-a.ptbrg1.sfba.home.com - 24.176.152.45) on Monday, December 25, 2000 - 09:38 pm:

I read everything I can about J.D. I have a great deal of respect for him. I was very impressed when he said the Trail side killer had a speech problem, and he has! Unfortunately I think they have the "wrong man" with the speech problem. That the first thoughts the police had of the real killer were correct, and we all know who that was!

By Ed N. (Edn) (spider-ntc-tc013.proxy.aol.com - 198.81.17.23) on Monday, December 25, 2000 - 11:37 pm:

Barring unusual circumstances, I'll be there. As long as it's not on the same weekend as the Grand Slam Star Trek convention...

In addition to an actual conference with invited guests, how about inviting some Z suspects to give their thoughts on what it's like to be the accused and how it's affected their lives, if at all? The only one who comes to mind that might actually put in an appearance is Mike O'Hare.

And, for those out-of-towners who have never been here before, a guided Z-tour?

To be honest, I doubt any would officially attend. But I think it would be kinda cool to have them speak anyway, especially those who cannot possibly be Z, like O'Hare. But don't count on seeing any of them show up.

By Billbaker (Billbaker) (pool0465.cvx38-bradley.dialup.earthlink.net - 216.244.31.210) on Tuesday, January 02, 2001 - 09:42 pm:

I would love to attend, depending on when, more than where, it is scheduled. You'll be able to spot me. Just look for the wallflower that is too shy, painfully so, to be pried off the wall. It will be my first related "symposium," ever, since I went out on a limb in 1972 to publicly suggest that our double homicide was possibly the work of the Zodiac. Nothing since has dissuaded me from that premise.

By Ed N. (Edn) (spider-ntc-tc034.proxy.aol.com - 198.81.17.34) on Tuesday, January 02, 2001 - 10:09 pm:

Bill! Glad to see you're back... Howard's back too... not sure when it'll be, maybe in the next few months at the very earliest...

BTW, as I was checking some old Chronicle stories, I read about another homicide on the beach in SB in July 1970. There was mention of yet another one in February 1970 (I believe those were the dates). Do you remember about those at all and whether they were solved or not?

By Oscar (Oscar) (pool0616.cvx11-bradley.dialup.earthlink.net - 209.178.190.106) on Friday, January 05, 2001 - 12:27 am:

Count me in, as every gathering needs a court jester, so-to-speak. I have visited all of the sites, but I am not sure that I was in the proper area at Berryessa, so I think a tour would be an excellent idea! Ed, are you going to lead us? If this conference does happen, I would like to see the following things:
1. I would like to see Tom and Gregorypraxas slug it out in the jello pit.
2. It would be really neat- and darn convenient- if, lo and behold, Z showed up wearing his Berryessa costume. Imagine that.
3. Harvey Hine's presentation on the Zodiac-jewish mysticism connection, and why Kane is Cain.
4. Gareth Penn threatening to sue anyone who uses the word "zodiac" and "it". Maybe we could get Jake vs Penn as the undercard to the Tom vs Gregorypraxas fight...hmmm, the wheels are spinning.
Ed, is it alright if I show up in my Commander's uniform?
Hey, let's do this thing! But lets do it right. We should have the thing in a local dive bar.
Always Oscar
p.s. Penn in 2004...ride the baloney!

By Alanc (Alanc) (spider-wn051.proxy.aol.com - 205.188.197.171) on Friday, January 05, 2001 - 04:20 pm:

If you really want some entertainment, do a Google search on "Gareth Penn" sometime.

I'd show up at this thing if the timing is right. I'll be on the Left Coast in November for sure.

Bryan,
That, good sir, may be the sickest suggestion I have ever read on this board: where, pray tell, is your basic humanity? Just the thought of EdN running around with chum bits stuck in his beard...Nyeahhh!!
So, WHEN THE F@CK ARE WE GONNA' HAVE THIS THING?! Come on, Ed...Come on, Eileen...let's get it together, baby.
Oscar.
p.s. With the exception of AlanC or Gregorypraxas, I will put people from the East coast up in my ...special room.

By Bryan (Bryan) (144.141.27.172) on Tuesday, January 23, 2001 - 07:48 am:

Oscar,
would that make it to the zodies? Ive read EdN stuff and I think we are on the same wavlengh. The other reason,I was scared to death of the Zodiac killer, and when Marine world was located in South San Fran I did'nt want to go because we had to go through the "CITY" and I just knew that the Zodiac was going to get me.
