The Wacky World of Zynchronicity Message Board: General Zodiac Discussion: The Wacky World of Zynchronicity

By Ed N. (Edn) ( - on Monday, January 15, 2001 - 11:33 pm:

Zynchronicity (noun): a term used to describe the various baffling yet bizarre coincidences, synchronicities and other assorted oddities that surround the infamous Zodiac case of the Bay Area in Northern California and its investigators...

OK, so it's not in the dictionary, but this is what it might look like there. It's a word I coined just moments ago to explain the things described above. The reason I came up with it is I just had to post the following unbelievable encounter that illustrates the zynchronicity of this case at its best:

On Saturday (January 13th, 2001), I met a man named Paul Stein (note the spelling). This man, within a year or two of 10-11-1969, moved with his parents into a house just a few doors down from where Z murdered Paul Stine (I have yet to verify that beyond his story, but I believe him nonetheless as I explain below), and was told about it, but was unaware of the difference in surnames until I pointed it out to him on Saturday. He went to school with the children who saw Z that night (the reason I believed his incredible story is that he knew their names, and only a few people do), although he was unaware that they all saw Z, because at least one of them never mentioned it before. He also knew Robert Hunter Jr, Carl's and Harry Martin's favorite suspect, who is innocent of the Z crimes.

What makes this a typical instance of zynchronicity, besides the obvious, is that I also met other friends of the children in November 1999, who knew the story but also knew their names, which is why I believed them. And the day before that, I met a former classmate of Cheri Jo Bates.

Plus, in late August/early September 2000, I met a lawyer who was a friend of the late Melvin Belli, who Z wanted to represent him and to whom he sent a piece of Stine's bloody shirt on 12-20-1969.

Now, these zynchronicities just happen to surround me and Stine, and the case in general. Weird huh? Now, this is just one example of the zynchronicities that surround this case, and all of them are equally odd and bizarre, some of which have been mentioned before on this board. So, if it sounds far out, it probably isn't, but is just another zynchronicity.

P.S. I did ask Paul Stein for permission to post this story, and he did agree. I think he got a kick out of the whole thing.

This is a great idea for a thread, and I think the neologism "zynchronicity" is very groovy.

By Oscar (Oscar) ( - on Tuesday, January 16, 2001 - 10:03 pm:

I concur; "zynchronicity" is a fab tag, baby! I know exactly what you mean. In 1987, I first read Graysmith's book and found it quite interesting. When I finished reading the book, I put it down and did not give it much thought. Living in Canada at the time, I heard very little about the Zodiac. Even during Z's 'reign', stories in the Canadian papers were few and far between- in fact, they were most likely filled under the 'Alternative Lifestyles' section of the Toronto Star.
A full ten years later, I was waiting to take a bus from LAX to the SFV. Like the idiot I am, I had left my novel on the plane and had nothing to read. As I am a voracious reader and the ride would take a while, this would kill me (plus, people who start random conversations w/strangers in LA end up on the evening news)! I took a seat on the bus and, lo and behold, someone had left a copy of Graysmith's ZODIAC on the seat. Wild, eh?
I re-read it and it really hit home this time, and it led to my ongoing fascination with the case.
Have you ever noticed that Z-related things are all around you when you don't know about the case, but once you do, look out! I have seen more Karman Ghias lately. A bar named, I kid you not, "The Zodiac Club'" ("The Best in Nightly Entertainment"), opened up down the street from me a couple of years ago. The club closed after, once again, I kid you not, a shooting took place on the dance floor. Man!When this club opened up, I was just getting into the case and, when I saw the sign, with the grimly ironic promise of "nightly entertainment", I went screaming down the street like Aunt Jemima without hotcakes!!
I was at a garage sale the other weekend. What did I find? A vintage pair of size 11 Wing Walkers! My brother called me six months ago from Canada and told me that his new karate instructor's name was-hold on to your giblet- Lee Allen! I just about swallowed the phone.
Does anyone else out there have stories of zynchronicity? Barf em' out!
p.s. I met a guy who lived in San Francisco during the late 1960's. I would tell you his name, except he couldn't remember it himself.

By Tom Voigt (Tomvoigt) ( - on Tuesday, January 16, 2001 - 10:27 pm:

A close approximation of my name can be found in the 340-symbol cipher. That's a good example of zynchronicity, IMHO.

By Kc (Kc) ( - on Wednesday, January 17, 2001 - 08:04 pm:

Tom, are you the one that I communicated with approx. a year ago, regarding a letter sent to Calistoga? If so I never heard what your thoughts on that letter were?

By Kc (Kc) ( - on Thursday, January 18, 2001 - 10:36 am:

Tom, ignore my question, after looking up the file which I had stored away,(I keep putting this case in back of drawer, then somehow get pulled back into renewed interest) I realize that it was not you that I had communicated with previously, but a gentleman named Michael Butterfield, in AZ..Sorry to take up space needlessly.

By Hurley (Hurley) ( - on Thursday, January 18, 2001 - 07:02 pm:

Lol Tom I've noticed what looks like could be your name before in the one cipher!

By Ed N. (Edn) ( - on Thursday, January 18, 2001 - 07:10 pm:

Here's another case of zynchronicity at it's best: my brother's girlfriend is, believe it or not, actually named after Darlene Ferrin. And the real estate agent who helped my parents with their new home used to live down the street from the Suennens...

By Oscar (Oscar) ( - on Thursday, January 18, 2001 - 08:50 pm:

Has it occurred to anyone that it is more than a little creepy that Tom's name, by his own admission, can be found in the cipher. Hmmm...reminds me of those time travel/paradox conundrums...

By Tom Voigt (Tomvoigt) ( - on Thursday, January 18, 2001 - 11:16 pm:

Creepy? Howard Stern thought so...

By Oscar (Oscar) ( - on Friday, January 19, 2001 - 02:33 am:

Congratulations! You have the dubious distinction of being one of the few individuals on the planet who has 'creeped out' the King of the Creeps...or is he still the self-proclaimed 'King of All Media'?
Further 'zynchronicity'. Listen to the Police song, "Synchronicity" very carefully. Sting actually sings "zynchronicity" in the third chorus...several times. Now, I don't know if this is because Monsieur Sting had his jowls crammed full of Grey Poupon that particular day, or it it is just one of those 'wacky coincidences', but I would recommend "pulling a Penn"! Sue the boy for every pence. Check it out. I swear he says "zynchronicity". Now, Ed, now! Turn off the police scanner.
Oscar Wilder.
p.s. I hereby serve notice that the colloquialism, "pulling a Penn", has been coined by this humble author on this day. Any attempts to unlawfully use this expression will result in litigation, or at least 50 lashes!
p.p.s. This Gennesee Cream Ale is ffffffffffr##ggin GREAT! Better than peyote buttons.

By Alanc (Alanc) ( - on Friday, January 19, 2001 - 10:59 am:

Nothing like peyote buttons to increase zynchronicity, though. Genessee Cream is good, but it won't set off visions of a ten-foot cactus in a Zodiac hood racing down the hall with your Pappy's genitals hanging out of its mouth...

By Oscar (Oscar) ( - on Friday, January 19, 2001 - 06:28 pm:

Dear Alanc,
That was pretty darn good, I must admit. However, I have had the usual 'visions' during my errant Yaqui phase- you know, stuff like your dead grandfather crawling up your leg with a purple fire extinguisher, or seeing flying apes playing polo with the Queen Mother (standard fare)- but I swear by this Genessee Cream Ale! It is the most hallucinogenic substance I have ever ingested. I had a dream about Jake and Ed, dressed as circus midgets, hitch-hiking to San Francisco (with a pack of dirt bike riding Lesbians, no less) in the hopes of climbing Mount Diablo in a large tortilla-shaped 'land crawler', while a nude Tom plays maracas and chants "I've got the power". Do I need help or what?
Keep your peyote, pass the cream!
Oscar...or at least I think I still am!
p.s. Penn in 2004. Watch out for the White Rabbit.

By Ed N. (Edn) ( - on Friday, January 19, 2001 - 09:21 pm:

Oscar: you need someone to set that stuff to music!

By Ed N. (Ed_N) ( - on Tuesday, March 06, 2001 - 12:59 pm:

It seemed more appropriate to post here concerning Jake's mention of Allen and Avery being born in Hawaii (Charlie Chan at Treasure Island): Allen was born in 1933, and Avery ca. 1933 or 1934. Both were Navy brats, and, all things considered, might have even known (of) each other! More weird zynchronicity (regardless of whether Allen was Z or not), and it all started more than 30 years before there even was a Z...

By Jeff (Jeff) ( - on Wednesday, April 04, 2001 - 06:38 am:

While researching a suspect (going on name only) I found one who lives in New Mexico and performs in a theater group called the RIVERSIDE Emsemble......

By Ed N (Ed_N) ( - on Wednesday, April 04, 2001 - 07:24 pm:

Jeff: as I think we've all discovered, zynchronicities abound in this case... anyone have any more? I have a few more I haven't mentioned yet, but I can't be the only one that zynchronicity affects...

By Ed N (Ed_N) ( - on Tuesday, April 17, 2001 - 05:22 pm:

A couple more recent zynchronous events of note: a couple of weekends back, I went to a Star Trek convention, and met and got an autograph from one of the guest stars of the original series, Brian Tochi, who was in the episode "And the Children Shall Lead" (you might recognize him as an adult in various other things, such as Police Academy III and IV, and the Revenge of the Nerds movies).

"And the Children Shall Lead" is an interesting story, where all the adults in a colony are killed, and the children survive, and are being led by a noncorporeal creature called "Gorgan," who wants them to take over the Enterprise so they can take him to another world, presumably to wreak havoc there. Gorgan was played by none other than Melvin Belli, apparently a friend of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry (Belli's son was also in that episode).

One thing of interest here is that Melvin Belli was on the Jim Dunbar show on 10-22-1969, when someone claiming to be Z called Oakland PD claimed he would make contact by phone on the show later that morning. A mental patient from Napa State Hospital did instead.

Another thing is that "And the Children Shall Lead" was originally telecast on October 11th, 1968. Yes, that's correct, precisely one year to the day before Z murdered Paul Stine. What does it mean? Is it significant? I don't know. But if Z watched Batman, maybe he watched Star Trek too, as they were contemporaneous shows.

The other zynchronous event is that I met a man this last Sunday who turned out to be an old acquaintance of Paul Stein, the man I kicked this thread off with in January. He also lived a few blocks away from Washington and Cherry, though not quite as close as Paul Stein did.

Those are more of my weird experiences for the last few weeks. Anyone else have something?

By Sandy (Sandy) ( - on Saturday, April 21, 2001 - 09:36 pm:

ED , I thought the phone used on the Dunbar show, was a public phone on the grounds of Napa State Hosp. Couldn't anyone use that phone? If the person was a patient there, why would that exclude him from being Z? I lived a few blocks from there, the patients could come and go pretty much as they pleased. Some of them had week end passes. In the late 70s, a young girl got away from a man who was watching her ride her bike. The last time, he was hiding under a bridge in Martinez Ca. as she drove by him, he fired a shot gun at her but missed. Her father who heard the shot chased the man into a cemetery. The sheriff's dept. caught the man and returned him back to Napa St. Hosp. The girl remembered the older man had a bad eye! Also in the late 70's a young man in Napa was hitching a ride. A older man picked him up,he told the boy to take off his clothes. He did, and then the man told him he was the Zodiac. As the car drove over the bridge on Imola ave the traffic was slowing to a stop, the boy got out and jumped into the Napa river! Has any one else out there, heard about this one that got away?

surfing the net on manson i ran across some strange things indeed. one such thing had a
wall paper with a repeated hierogliphic like equation, sometime later i considered the equation might be, square + pi + zenta //(x) = equinox, or was it ,pi square.......... ?
in searching combinations of those words ,it just gets stranger and .....such are the postings from the underworld.....zyncro... zenta = line drawing

By Ed N (Ed_N) ( - on Thursday, January 17, 2002 - 11:36 pm:

Another instance of zynchronicity: I just discovered today that the husband of a woman I met at work last year (and who I just saw again today) went to school with the son of Jim Deasy, the guy who was assigned to the Z case with Toschi in April 1978 (Zodiac, p. 211). I can't seem to get away from this stuff...

By Sandy (Sandy) ( - on Monday, January 21, 2002 - 08:27 pm:

Ed, Did you know Jim Deasy has some Z info that he keeps in a safe place? (not at S.F.P.D.) Maybe he has the missing tape of the Z talking to Vallejo PD ? I met him in Jan. 1990, the day I was there, he told me two men who also had z info, would be showing up that morning. He misplaced everything I gave him! I think the Z case, took it's toll on everyone involved with it. He was a very nice man, and very ready for his retirement. Maybe you and Tom, could pay Jim a visit, and have a look at what he has on the Z?

By Ed N (Ed_N) ( - on Friday, April 05, 2002 - 10:17 pm:

On Monday, I met someone who's younger sister was a classmate of Cecelia Shepard's brother-in-law...

By Ed N (Ed_N) ( - on Thursday, May 16, 2002 - 01:09 am:

The Paul Stein I met last year did indeed live at 110 Cherry Street, a few doors north of where Z murdered Paul Stine. His family moved there sometime in 1971.

By Ed N (Ed_N) ( - on Thursday, August 08, 2002 - 06:46 pm:

Leslie B. Lundblad was born on 10-14-1913 (56 years less one day before Z mailed his letter on 10-13-1969), and died on 10-8-1977, just 6 days before his 64th birthday. He was buried in Tulocay cemetery in Napa (just 1.3 miles from where I currently live) on 10-11-1977, the 8th anniversary of the murder of Paul Stine.

I think a wonderful Zynchronicity can be found in Bin Laden's terrorist training manual. See it at The Smoking - archives, Terrorist Training Manual 101- ciphers and codes. I'm new to the boards and too CI to give the direct link. Greetings to all - The WB

By Ryan Olesin (Ryan) ( - on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 - 05:51 am:

I just recieved the Argosy magazine from 1970 with the Zodiac on the cover. I noticed the address label is still on the cover. The name of the person who was on that label was Robert C Hansen... rh

By Scott Bullock (Scott_Bullock) ( - on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 - 11:57 am:

I wish I could find that magazine! Anyone out there with an extra?

I recently obtained a copy of San Francisco magazine from April, 1974. It has an article on the Zodiac featuring Toschi, Armstrong, Morrill, and Avery. I'll be posting on some of their remarks in the near future.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 - 11:21 pm:

Ryan, the Zynchronicity doesn't stop there: in Alaska not long ago, there was a very prolific serial killer named Robert Hansen. He picked up prostitutes, then let them loose in remote, heavily-forested areas and hunted them like game.

Scott, I can either xerox Argosy or scan and e-mail. (Scanning is faster.)

By Ed N. (Ed_N) ( - on Wednesday, February 12, 2003 - 01:59 pm:

More zynchronicity, but this time mostly about the Lundblads: today I came across (quite by accident) the obituary of William G. "Bill" Lundblad in The Napa Register (7-11-1980, p. 22), who was Les Lundblad's younger brother. He was born 10-31-1921 (45 years less one day before the murder of CJB), and died on 7-10-1980 (6 years and 2 days after Z's last authenticated letter was mailed, and 6 years exactly after the story was published in the Register) at the age of 58. During WWII, he worked at Mare Island (military connection), and even jointly "owned and operated the Annex Market in Vallejo" with older brother Les.

He married Jane Slora on 3-17-1961 (Darlene's 14th birthday), and

In 1965 he operated the ADM Simming Pool Maintenance in Napa and later became owner and operator of Wm. G. Lundblad Custom Pools. (water connection)

He was buried in Tulocay cemetery, where his brother is also buried (1.3 miles from where I am now writing this, which is also a few blocks from where Sandy used to live in 1969, and about 0.6 miles from where Gareth Penn lived ca. 1980).

As a bit of trivia, one of his sisters' names was Doris O'Day (I once knew someone named Beverly Hill).

By Sandy (Sandy) ( - on Tuesday, February 18, 2003 - 02:55 pm:

Ed, I will check my notes but I believe someone by the last name of O'Day bought Darlenes home on Virgina st.I thought you might like that!

By Sandy (Sandy) ( - on Saturday, February 22, 2003 - 02:05 pm:

Ed, I checked and her name was Edna O'day .

By Ed N. (Ed_N) ( - on Friday, March 07, 2003 - 11:49 pm:

Believe it or not, Zodiac helped me win Scrabble tonight!!! I was actually able to play the word "zodiac": I found myself with an "a," "d," "o" and "z," and there was already a "c" on the board I could use. I had to play two two-letter words while I waited to hopefully get an "i," and when I did and played my word, the "z" ended up on a triple letter score. The entire word was on a double word score, and it gave me a whopping 76 points (I haven't played in years, so I don't know if that's really unusual or not); I wasn't even concerned with what I'd score with it, I just thought it was cool that I'd be able to play it. I ended up winning 320 to 248, which I may not have were it not for Z.

Ed, if you could have crammed Kaczynski somewhere in there you would have been rich.

By Ed N. (Ed_N) ( - on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 04:48 pm:

About 2 years ago, I saw (didn't exactly meet) Robin Tunney (In Control of All Things) at the spa at Meadowood in St. Helena, where I used to work. There's a bit more zynchronicity there too: Lynda Kanes also worked there prior to her murder in 1971.

By Ed N. (Ed_N) ( - on Monday, June 16, 2003 - 04:54 pm:

Oh, and after looking at David Faraday's death certificate again recently, I noticed that he was buried at Tulocay Cemetery (don't know how I missed that before!) along with Les Lundblad, 1.3 miles away from where I am sitting typing this...
