The Big News Message Board: General Zodiac Discussion: 2002 Task-Force Meeting: The Big News

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 09:35 pm:

I've been wanting to plan something like this for a long time: an all-amateur task-force meeting on July 4, 2002, at Blue Rock Springs Park in Vallejo, Calif.

Please keep in mind alcohol is not permitted at the event. However, please bring any other refreshments you choose. Umbrellas might not be a bad idea, either...for rain or sun.

I'm working very hard to make sure this is a safe, pleasant way for all of us to meet.

By Frenzy (Frenzy) ( - on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 10:58 pm:

I am so excited about this!!!! this is gonna be so great! finally a gathering of minds, not having to worry about jurisdictions and what not!
can't wait to see you guys there.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Thursday, May 23, 2002 - 11:02 pm:

Welcome to the message board. Can't wait myself!

By Spencer (Spencer) ( - on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 12:28 am:

Alright, I'm jealous now. I'm going to be in Ireland while this is going on. Dam*it! Are you guys going to recreate the "chase scene" from ZODIAC (from Mageau's to BRS) in the last minutes of July 4/early minutes of July 5?

P.S. Is there going to be a burning of ZU?

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 12:41 am:

Spencer, is it too late to change your plans?

By Spencer (Spencer) ( - on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 12:46 am:

Unfortunately, it's a law school study abroad program, and I've already bought the plane tickets, paid the deposit, taken out the loans, and irrevocably committed myself to it. It's just really bad timing for me. Maybe this'll become an annual thing, and if so, I'd definitely do it any other time.

P.S. We should get together for a beer sometime when I'm back in Portland.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 12:49 am:

I don't know about this becoming an annual event, but how about your Portland idea in early June?

By Valentine Smith (Valentinesmith) ( - on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 06:10 pm:

Drat. I'd love to go...I won't know for at least the next 4 weeks though. My birthday is the 5th, so perhaps I can treat myself to a trip...

By Ed N (Ed_N) ( - on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 07:49 pm:

I was hoping to invite a few special guests there at BRS, such as Art Allen, but it was kinda difficult to locate his ashes in the sea off San Rafael...

Other than that, the rest of us will have a blast.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Sunday, May 26, 2002 - 12:37 pm:

So far the response has been excellent, even with Memorial Day weekend.

This might get huge...

By Douglas Oswell (Dowland) ( - on Sunday, May 26, 2002 - 03:20 pm:

I don't think I'll be able to make it, but for those of us stuck on the east coast I'm considering a day-trip to Rock Creek Park to search for Gary Condit's Tag Heuer watch. If you're interested, let me know.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Sunday, May 26, 2002 - 09:25 pm:

Doug, what about Rusconi? Isn't he in San Jose?

At this point it looks like Gareth Penn probably won't be able to attend due to other commitments, however he will provide materials for those interested in his thoughts.

By Sylvie (Sylvie14) ( - on Sunday, May 26, 2002 - 10:46 pm:

this is becoming a Z convention. Cool.

By Chris (Chris) ( - on Monday, May 27, 2002 - 12:01 am:

I really wish i could go but i just started a new job. Any way im in texas and thats kinda far away. Tom, please dont stop with the extracurricular activities and keep us all posted on the happenings. oh, and pictures dont forget the pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Mike (Oklahoma_Mike) ( on Monday, May 27, 2002 - 08:38 am:

Hope everyone has a great time, I would love to attend if for no other reason to see the Bay Area again, and to walk the actual terrain with my fellow Zodiacphiles, wow! Unfortunately I just returned from a 2-and-a-half-week vacation and may take a long weekend to west Texas in mid July, so there's no way. My envy knows no limits. Enjoy, my friends.

By Douglas Oswell (Dowland) ( - on Monday, May 27, 2002 - 09:06 am:

Tom, I can't speak for Mike Rusconi, but I'll let him know what's going on. He's kept a fairly low profile since "Dr. Zodiac" first came out, and I believe it's because, among other things, he's burned-out and frustrated with the whole affair. He steadfastly refuses to purchase a computer or use the internet, so that pretty well keeps him out of the mainstream of things.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Monday, May 27, 2002 - 10:48 am:

Doug, sounds good.

Add Mike Kelleher to the list of attendees.

By Douglas Oswell (Dowland) ( - on Monday, May 27, 2002 - 11:05 am:

I'll be there in spirit, Tom. I've got a lot going on now, and I hate to travel, and I'm too cheap to spend the money.

By Judy (Judy) ( - on Monday, May 27, 2002 - 01:48 pm:

Tom, I am totally bummed. I would love to
attend this awesome event! However, we have already planned our vacation with some friends- at
this same time.

Red with rage!

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Monday, May 27, 2002 - 10:24 pm:

As of now it looks like there will be quite a few well-known names involved.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Monday, May 27, 2002 - 11:15 pm:

Doug, you wouldn't have many expenses besides airfare. (As I also told Jake.) Transportation will be provided, and lodging expenses can also be cut.

Doug and Jake, if you can find a reasonable airfare let me know...

By Howard Davis (Howard) ( - on Tuesday, May 28, 2002 - 07:40 pm:

I will be there!

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Wednesday, May 29, 2002 - 12:49 am:

Penn has already been invited.

By VSCANTU (Vscantu) ( - on Wednesday, May 29, 2002 - 12:09 pm:

TOM: Your "ZODIAC PICNIC" idea is an absolutely great one!
I am chomping-at-the-bit to experience it. 1) What about the author of "ZODIAC" & the new "ZODIAC UNMASKED", ROBERT GRAYSMITH? Will he be attending? 2) Also, how about a running list on your Website of "noteworthy" guests who will also be 'on the bill'? I know all of your viewers would love to see it! And it will be a hot lead for increasing regular as well as media traffic to ""!
3) I am extremely interested (more than "mildly cereous") in knowing what kind of "ZODIAC" products will be available at your "ZODIAC PICNIC". I know all of us want to buy things such as some nice "ZODIAC Buttons", collectors' items, and even joke Zodiac novelties! Also, how about food items such as "ZODIAC" cookies, cakes, ales, etc.? Not that this should be a festival of greed, but it is a rare, fun opportunity for us few 'Zodiac-maniacs' to buy some one-of-a-kind products. They will definitely make for impressive "conversation pieces".
I envision this Event like the first "STAR TREK Convention" held in New York in 1971 (but much more serious). It led to a whole new WORLD of STAR TREK-mania! VICTOR
It's gonna be a "blast"! VICTOR

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Wednesday, May 29, 2002 - 12:59 pm:

Victor, I may bring a few copies of the video to sell, but that's about it. The buttons will be free, plus I'll have a few other items to give away.

Of course, people are invited to bring any Zodiac-related items they want...although the food you mentioned doesn't sound especially appetizing to me!

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Wednesday, May 29, 2002 - 08:16 pm:

Looks like retired VPD investigator Ed Rust will be attending...

By Sandy (Sandy) ( - on Thursday, May 30, 2002 - 05:19 pm:

You know for sure I will be attending as well! I have wanted to meet Ed Rust for a long time, he is or was interested in Kane. I would like to find out for sure, if the guy I have been told is Kane,is in fact him or not! Tom saw the two pictures I have and said, that the guy looked like a fat, drunk Mexican. Not that there is anything wrong with that!! Will the guy I took the pictures of in 1990 at Lyons restaurant Antioch, please come to the party? I have a hood I would like you to try on! (Of course if he is the real Z, he would be too cowardly to show up.) Kane if you read this ,please come to the party,so we can talk this out. If you are not the man stalking me, then I think we should get this cleared up, don't you?

By Ed N (Ed_N) ( - on Thursday, May 30, 2002 - 08:52 pm:

Sandy and I checked out the spot today, and it looks like there will be plenty of room for everyone.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Thursday, May 30, 2002 - 09:15 pm:

Add former Napa investigator Ken Narlow to the list of highly-probable attendees.
(He told me tonight he will do everything he can to at least make an appearance and say a few words, if not more.)

By Gregusjay (Gregusjay) ( - on Friday, May 31, 2002 - 09:19 pm:

Hey Tom,
Can ya bring a video and put my name on it?
I was going to ask you via e-mail, but kinda figured I bothered you too much already..
Any way I look forward to attending...

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Saturday, June 01, 2002 - 06:26 pm:

Greg, I'll have plenty of copies.
(I will also be doing a bit of filming for the new video...but that's a different thread.)

By Esau (Esau) ( - on Monday, June 03, 2002 - 01:36 pm:

Tom, is it a given that if we come we'll end up on a video? I don't want to be on video but I do want to come. There's going to be some people I'd like to finally meet.......

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Monday, June 03, 2002 - 01:42 pm:

No, you don't have to be filmed. In fact, I will probably get most of it out of the way before noon.

By Ed N (Ed_N) ( - on Tuesday, June 04, 2002 - 08:58 pm:

I counted 68 parking spaces plus 5 spaces for disabled parking. There are 22 tables, but most of them will be in the sun most of the day, so everyone be sure to bring hats, sunblock, beach umbrellas or whatever if you need them. If the temperature the last few days is any indication of what summer might be like, the 4th is bound to be a scorcher (but we might luck out with a cool, cloudy day...). There is one huge tree there which will provide some shade. Bay Area weather can be unusual, so a sweater (or dark windbreaker...) just in case might not be a bad idea. There are also the two barbecue grills near the tables. I'm thinking that I should invent the Zodiac burger for the get-together, after Geezer's Burger Mess (Geezer's closed last month, so we need to keep it's memory alive somehow...).

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Wednesday, June 05, 2002 - 05:48 pm:

Just spoke with ex-VPD Richard Hoffman. He's been invited, along with George Bawart.

Pam Huckaby is probably too ill to attend, but she is spreading the word throughout her family. I expect her brother, Leo, to show up, along with her sister Linda.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Thursday, June 06, 2002 - 11:05 am:

The list of attendees is now approaching 100...

By Classic (Classic) ( - on Thursday, June 06, 2002 - 11:12 am:

Tom, Any z suspects expected to attend? Classic

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Thursday, June 06, 2002 - 11:22 am:

I'd hate to ruin any surprises.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Friday, June 07, 2002 - 07:58 pm:

Look for Harry Martin and probably William Beeman to be in attendance.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Friday, June 07, 2002 - 10:14 pm:

Sylvie, you haven't commented on your own availability for July 4.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Friday, June 07, 2002 - 10:17 pm:

Peter? Ray? Haven't heard from you guys, either.

Who else will be there?

By Sylvie (Sylvie14) ( - on Saturday, June 08, 2002 - 09:06 am:

I want to, I really want to. Just not sure yet.
It is a wonderful plan. I hope it becomes an annual event.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Saturday, June 08, 2002 - 11:12 am:

Dean Ferrin has been invited.

By Lapumo (Lapumo) ( - on Sunday, June 09, 2002 - 10:27 am:

It all comes a little to soon for me.I did my best to organize things however being so far away
meant, for one, that I'd have to stay there 14 days.I have other things on and just couldn't squeeze it in at this time. Thanks to those who helped behind the scenes.Hopefully I'll meet some of you later in the year.HAVE FUN

By Peter H (Peter_H) ( - on Monday, June 10, 2002 - 06:58 am:

Thanks for asking. July 4 is a tough one for me. Outside chance I'll be travelling to SF on business, otherwise I'll have to rely on Jake to represent the elitist, cynical, overintellectuallized contra-Allenista Massachusetts perspective for me. What about it Jake? You're closer to Cambridge than I am, anyway.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Monday, June 10, 2002 - 10:13 pm:

David Van Nuys ("This Is The Zodiac Speaking") might be attending...

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Thursday, June 13, 2002 - 03:08 pm:

Looks like Monday (July 1) will be spent in San Francisco, Tuesday at Lake Berryessa, Wednesday will be research in Napa, Vallejo and Benicia, and of course the big event on Thursday.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Saturday, June 15, 2002 - 11:25 pm:

Michael O'Hare has been invited.

By Peter H (Peter_H) ( - on Monday, June 17, 2002 - 06:00 am:

That should elicit an interesting response. Let us know?

By Oddball (Oddball) ( - on Wednesday, June 26, 2002 - 10:25 am:

I was really looking forward to attending, but I won't be able to. Hope everybody has a great time--I can't wait to hear how it went!

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Wednesday, June 26, 2002 - 01:58 pm:

Sorry you can't make it.

Matthew Hedger of the Calaveras County Ledger-Dispatch has been invited.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Thursday, June 27, 2002 - 01:43 pm:

Don Cheney has been invited.

By Scott Bullock (Scott_Bullock) ( - on Saturday, June 29, 2002 - 05:47 am:

This is, much to the delight of many I'm sure, my last post until returning from California.

Hey Zodiac, if you are still alive and are reading this, look me up in Vallejo and I'll be happy to kick your ass, you miserable piece of sh*t.

By Judy (Judy) ( - on Saturday, June 29, 2002 - 05:08 pm:

Tom, any chance Mike Mageau may show up?

By Judy (Judy) ( - on Saturday, June 29, 2002 - 05:09 pm:

Well,Scott, that should flush him right out!
