Preview: 2003 Task-Force Meeting Message Board: General Zodiac Discussion: Preview: 2003 Task-Force Meeting

By Tom Voigt (Admin) ( - on Thursday, January 02, 2003 - 02:19 pm:

While plans aren't yet etched in stone, it looks like the 2003 Task-Force Meeting will be held at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on Friday, July 4.

Following the meeting, a private gathering of us insiders will be held over the weekend at a Lake Berryessa resort such as Spanish Flat. (10 cabins are available/four-person occupancy each.)

Remember, these plans are tentative. Thoughts?

By Ed N. (Ed_N) ( - on Thursday, January 02, 2003 - 02:28 pm:

At GG Park, we'll be relatively close to both Haight-Ashbury (where Manson and Stine lived), Fell Street (Stine's last residence) and Washington & Cherry as well. Perhaps a Z-tour as well...

By Muskogee (Muskogee) ( - on Thursday, January 02, 2003 - 02:34 pm:

As was the case last year, my job/education will prevent me from attending. Excellent choice of venue. I hope you guys have a blast!

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Thursday, January 02, 2003 - 02:40 pm:

Muskogee, you've six months to think of a great excuse for missing a day of work. Don't give up so easily!

By Ed N. (Ed_N) ( - on Thursday, January 02, 2003 - 02:48 pm:

Won't we also need eggs and TP???

By Muskogee (Muskogee) ( - on Thursday, January 02, 2003 - 03:10 pm:

I wish I could! I'll be on the 4th day of my new job as a medical resident, though, and first-year residents ALWAYS work the holidays. The only saving grace is that some programs use July as orientation to the hospital and if I miss 2 days of orientation, I don't think that will kill anyone (well, actually it might...).

I'm even more anxious to attend now with the mention of the ZU pyre!

By Mike (Oklahoma_Mike) ( on Thursday, January 02, 2003 - 10:05 pm:

Hmmm, it's a long way, but my wife just commented she's never seen San Francisco (I was at a convention there in 1979) and would like to. I must gather my thoughts, let's see, 'Honey, I hear the bay area is really nice in midsummer..."
By the way, happy new year, everyone!

By Ryan Olesin (Ryan) ( - on Thursday, January 02, 2003 - 10:11 pm:

I've never been there either. I'm going to try to make it this year.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 12:44 am:

With you new blood combined with all the TFM veterans (Chalandra, Victoria, Roger, Scott, Howie, Sandy, Ed, Marty, Kei, Clark, Kendra, J.Eric and Victor) this could fill up Kezar Stadium.

(Not familiar with Kezar Stadium? See Dirty Harry.)

By William Baker (Bill_Baker) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 01:00 am:

Hey, when I lived there in the early 50s, I remember the SF Seals playing at Kezar Stadium. GG Park offered a lot to a kid, including the aquarium, museum, tea gardens and, on the fringes, the zoo. The Park itself, where I'd go on family picnics, had one place where they had some bison, which were a real treat to see. Since I lived on the Presidio, the Park was just a few minutes' drive away, so we spent a lot of time there. Be great to experience it again, and I can only hope I have the time and money to attend the TF meeting.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 01:42 am:

Bill, if you've got the time we'll make it happen. I guarantee a lot of people would be thrilled if you attended.

By VSCANTU (Vscantu) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 01:51 am:

TOM: Golden Gate Park sounds fine. If a little scarey. It is centrally located. ALTERNATE SITE: THE PRESIDIO. Don't know if it's even available. But wouldn't it be cool to hang out there?? Anyway, my main thought is that I'd like to have "security" there. This board has gotten pretty heavy at times, which is good. But I would like to know that people like WHITE RABBITT (who is a Manson Family FANATIC & has threatened several people here under the "WHITE RABBITT" thread) & E-SOW (ESSAU?) who has also threatened & intimidated people here, while at other times talking about his "cleaning his guns", & "KENNY KILGORE" a.k.a. DENNIS KAUFMAN, (who has threatened You with the most hideous & violent senarios possible) are kept in check. This is serious. I think an "enforcement" presence is called for both in the public & private sectors of your great "Task Force" meeting. It will only INCREASE the attendance & pleasure of everyone involved.
Your "July 4, 2003 Task Force" meeting is a Fantastic idea that will go down in "true crime" history. More ideas to follow........

By Carolyn (Carolyn) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 02:13 am:

Sure sounds like fun! Are drop-in's welcome?! Maybe I could finally get down to see my niece in Antioch.

By Warren (Warren) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 07:34 am:

Has th' White Bunny been notified? Couldn't we expand this to include a Manson Family reunion -make 'em share some of the costs? Half a year is just about enough time for a new swastika carving to heal on my forehead. Must practice demonic stare. Must BS SO on reason for junket. So little time.

By Scott Bullock (Scott_Bullock) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 07:53 am:

I can appreciate your desire for security [last year, a certain member of this board told me to be sure that I wore a Kevlar vest to the meeting!!], and I agree that scum like Dennis should be kept in check, but Esau? I don't recall him ever "threatening or intimidating" anybody. I met Esau and thought he was great. He's one of the people that I wish I'd had more time to converse with. Anyway, what's wrong with someone who enjoys exercising his/her Second Amendment right?

Also, despite being pretty fried in the head, White Rabbitt is as harmless as a schoolgirl. In fact, I was the one who escorted him to and from the meeting, and took the time to buy his book before I left San Francisco.

I'm not trying to start an argument with you, Victor, because I will enjoy seeing you again; I just don't think that citing specific examples is an appropriate thing to do.

I think that meeting you would be an immense pleasure, and certainly hope that you are able to attend.

Carolyn, et al,

"Drop-ins" are most certainly welcome! Hope to see y'all there!

By Esau (Esau) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 08:59 am:

Victor, I believe that what I wrote to you was something to the effect that you were very brave in insulting me on the board and next time I see you we'll see if you're that brave in person.
I've read your posts and you seem to like to display what you think is superior intellect by insulting and goading people. A good example is you calling me "E-SOW" on your last post. You WILL pronounce and write my name correctly as you know it. I follow the golden rule as best as I can. Treat me good and I'll treat you good. Treat me bad and I'll send you home with a shiner. That's my personal policy. I never threatened anyone on this board. I clean my guns. I clean my car. I clean my house. Does that mean I threaten people with guns? If everyone on this board were face to face there would be a lot less insults written to each other. When I put my hand out to you and you shake it that will show you I'm no one to be afraid of.
Scott, White Rabbit a harmless schoolgirl. Now there's a sight.
Bill, please try to make it. I would really like to meet you.
Ed, can you get Det. Narlowe to show up?

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 11:28 am:

Esau and Victor: don't read too much into text; it's very easy to misinterpret what you see. I've met both of you and think you'd get along great, so let's start over, ok? If not, at least continue through e-mail...

Regarding security, add "Kenny Kilgore" to the list of schoolgirls. My biggest concern will be the weather.

By Kendra (Kendra) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 12:19 pm:

Golden Gate Park is a great idea, Tom. What should we do about food this year? Maybe potluck? Hmmm, I could bring some more bagels...

By Sandy (Sandy) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 01:52 pm:

Lets invite the guy who wrote the letters and believes he could be Zodiac. I think I could convince him he was not,and put his mind to rest. Lets help this poor guy. Kindra great, I will bring the salad.

By Lapumo (Lapumo) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 01:55 pm:

Really hope to get there, but things would have to fall right, being so far away.Am determined to get there at some stage though. At least I have plenty of notice,to try to work things out.

By Ed N. (Ed_N) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 08:11 pm:

Esau: that would be great if Ken Narlow could show up. If Tom hasn't already e-mailed him, I will... hmm, what are the chances of Toschi and Armstrong showing up???

By Ryan Olesin (Ryan) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 08:14 pm:

We'll send Toschi some fan mail, maybe he'll show up.

Lapumo, where are you coming from? I'm going to try from Ontario Canada so you would not be the only one who is far.

By Gregusjay (Gregusjay) ( - on Friday, January 03, 2003 - 11:34 pm:

The 4th falls on a Friday this year. It'd be great to have the tour maybe the day after the meeting, only because I am hoping the tour would include the Vallejo crime scenes as well as Lake Berryessa...I would look forward to the meeting no matter where it'd be held.. I wonder if Joji's japanese restaurant is still open on Union Street? If anyone's interested, I could show you where Belli's former office is as well as his current one (carried on by his son). You used to be able to look directly into Melvin's office from a plate glass window in the mid 90's.
It's very cluttered with momentos from his career as the "King of Torts".

By Lapumo (Lapumo) ( - on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 02:08 pm:

The other side of the world Ryan, Ireland.

By Ryan Olesin (Ryan) ( - on Saturday, January 04, 2003 - 02:12 pm:

Ok you win.

By Tom Stout (Tom_Stout) ( - on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 10:26 am:

Well hello from San Francisco!
So, all you Z sleuths will be invading my "backyard" this 4th of July eh?
Geez..There goes the neighborhood!

Just kidding!
I visit many web sites and I must say, this is my favorite! Such a fascinating case that attracts such an interesting array of opinions!
I really do enjoy reading all these posts!
Almost always articulate and insightful,it provides better entertainment then anything network TV has to offer to be sure!
Since I have about a 5 minute commute to GGP I guess I have no excuse not to drop in and say hello!

Anyone out there ever see the movie "Time after time"? Where Jack the ripper is transported by a time machine to 1979 San Francisco?
There is a line in that movie I would like to quote.
"Us San Franciscan's are pretty damned proud of this town"!
Take care everyone!
Great job on this site!
Tom S

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Sunday, January 05, 2003 - 01:24 pm:

Thanks, Tom. This year's event should be great. Maybe we'll rent a bus so Ed can give everyone the "Z Tour"'s quite impressive.

By Esau (Esau) ( - on Monday, January 06, 2003 - 05:17 am:

Tom Stout, "Time After Time"... Excellent flick.

By Tom Stout (Tom_Stout) ( - on Monday, January 06, 2003 - 12:33 pm:

"Us San Franciscan's" is not grammatically correct.
Please excuse.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Monday, January 06, 2003 - 03:19 pm:

Well, it looks like Golden Gate Park is out; they seem to be picnic-table challenged. Other options include the Presidio, Kezar Stadium and?

By Ed N. (Ed_N) ( - on Monday, January 06, 2003 - 10:09 pm:

Maybe we could all do the picnic thing at GGP and bring blankets... wait, bad idea, if Z is still out there, he might have flashbacks to LB...

By Kendra (Kendra) ( - on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 12:12 am:

How about Julius Kahn Playground?

By Howard Davis (Howard) ( - on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 01:03 pm:

Along the wall Kendra?

By Esau (Esau) ( - on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 01:22 pm:

What about Solano Park? It's about 3 or 4 miles east of the Monticello Dam at Lake Berryessa.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 01:29 pm:

I want to hold the event in San Francisco this year...

By Scott Bullock (Scott_Bullock) ( - on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 02:27 pm:

Kendra's suggestion of Julius Kahn playground is pretty good. I can't remember their picnic table situation though.

By Ray N (Ray_N) ( - on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 03:19 pm:

I'm working again, so I now have the same monsters to slay as everyone else. I'm going to try my best to work it out and be there.

By Scott Bullock (Scott_Bullock) ( - on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 03:56 pm:

Good to hear, Ray. I also hope you'll be among the attendees at the private gatherings. It was a helluva lot of fun last year.

By Scott Bullock (Scott_Bullock) ( - on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 04:10 pm:

BTW, Tom, isn't Kezar Stadium still fully functional? Are you talking about renting the place for a day or pitching tents in the parking lot?

Remember the scene in Dirty Harry that was shot in Kezar?

"You tried to kill me!" cries the wounded Scorpio.

Harry Calahan looks Scorpio in the eye with frustration, pain, and exhaustion but, above all else, anger. "If I'd tried that your head would be splattered all over this field. Now, where's the girl?"

So help me God, I really do love that movie.

By Tom Stout (Tom_Stout) ( - on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 05:03 pm:

Hi Scott Bullock!
I'm with you there!
I'm sure most of us would like to see Zodiac(Scorpio) get his head blown off by a 44 Magnum!
Like me, Clint was born and raised in Oakland.
We are very proud of him out here!

Hey all! I live in SF, if there's anything I can do to help (Scout out potential sights for picnic tables and such) please feel free to email me any requests!

By William Baker (Bill_Baker) ( - on Tuesday, January 07, 2003 - 11:05 pm:

How about something down on the Marina? That time of year the weather should be comfortable, and I'm sure the greenbelt areas would have picnic accommodations with plenty of parking. Picturesque, too.

By Howard Davis (Howard) ( - on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 12:39 am:

Good choice. Are the Japanese gardens still nice or...

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 12:43 am:

Howard, what do you care? Your're not invited after last year's drinky drinky, punchy punchy fiasco...

By Tom Stout (Tom_Stout) ( - on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 06:36 am:

The Marina on the 4th of July will be crowded with thousands of people for the Crissy Fields fireworks display. No parking for miles!

By VSCANTU (Vscantu) ( - on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 08:05 am:

It holds a huge amount of "Zodiac" significance & would make an excellent 'picnic' area! We could all speculate & examine on where The Zodiac hid from the police after he killed Paul Stine, just 2 blocks away. It may be even more fun than our Blue Rock Springs site last year...

By Tom Stout (Tom_Stout) ( - on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 08:41 am:

Keep in mind that tens of thousands will be coming to this area starting early in the morning.
There will be a lot of overflow into the Presidio for the Crissy field celebrations.
4th of July is a big event there.

By VSCANTU (Vscantu) ( - on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 09:05 am:

EXCELLENT! That will make for a very amusing time there. I'm sure we'll mix in with the crowd very well. It may even lead to some fascinating new connections. Let's just hope that "The Singapore Sliger" himself doesn't show up! Woooooh!

By Julia (Julia) ( - on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 06:49 pm:

Hello all! My name is Julia and I'm a new poster who's been perusing the site and this board for several months. I've been fascinated by the Zodiac case as far back as I can remember, and I'm sorry I didn't find you all sooner. I very much enjoy reading your posts and admire all the hard work so many of you have done.

I'm a Bay Area native currently residing in the lovely town of Vallejo, otherwise known as Zodiac ground zero, and I would like to help welcome you folks this July. Since you've kindly said newcomers would be welcome to drop by the task force meeting, not only will I do so, but...I'll bring cookies. Heh.

I'm thinking, though, that Tom Stout has made an excellent point about SF on July 4th. No idea how many of you have been here before, but SF is small, crowded, and full of psycho drivers. And perpendicular hills. And NO parking. The traffic is going to be HORRENDOUS (trust us! we know!) and public parks are liable to be hopping with events. Hence, you might want to consider reserving some sort of hotel/convention space as you would then not have to deal with the thronging public masses. I know that would cost money, but I wouldn't mind paying a small admission for a better venue. Or, some of us locals could scout around for a suitably obscure but friendly spot.

I'm sure you'll be hearing from me again before then, in any case--just thought I'd say hi and check in with my two cents.

Oh, one more thing: Vallejo has the best weather I've yet found in the Bay Area. SF does not. Remember the quote "the coldest winter I ever knew was a summer in San Francisco"? Bring sweaters.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 07:28 pm:

Julia, the more I think about it the less thrilled about least on July 4. Most likely I'll either change the date of the event or the city.

By William Baker (Bill_Baker) ( - on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 07:49 pm:

Tom, if I could offer my own opinion: I'd rather have it in SF but on another date. Frankly, with the thought of traveling on or around the 4th, whether by car or plane, and having to fight the crowds no matter where you hold it, a non-holiday meeting would be preferable.

By Nick (Nick) ( on Wednesday, January 08, 2003 - 11:18 pm:

Ditto. Travel around the holidays is difficult. It's not only expensive, there are typically other committments to deal with. I'm with Bill, a non-holiday meeting is preferrable.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Thursday, January 09, 2003 - 12:07 am:

Mt. Diablo is also an interesting alternative.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Thursday, January 09, 2003 - 12:23 am:

If anyone in the SF area can send me contact info for Kezar Stadium I'd appreciate it...I need rental prices, etc.

You can e-mail:

I hated to miss last year's event, and I'm hoping to make it this year--any excuse to go back to California!

By Howard Davis (Howard) ( - on Saturday, January 11, 2003 - 12:08 am:

Mt.Diablo -another good suggestion. But Tom, how do I get White Russians up there?

By Tom Stout (Tom_Stout) ( - on Saturday, January 11, 2003 - 08:24 am:

I'm a white Russian!
I'll find a way!

By Classic (Classic) ( - on Monday, January 13, 2003 - 10:27 am:

I am plannning on coming to meeting. I've never been to California before, so I am not familiar with the area. I'm thinking I might be able to kill two birds with one stone by driving out. I've always wanted to drive Rt. 66 and I'm not that crazy about flying. My questions are, is having a car there going to be a hindereance? I'll be driving a '63 vette. Do I have to worry about driving out and flying back because z copped my wheels?LOL Any suggestions? Thanks, Classic

By J Eric (J_Eric) ( - on Monday, January 13, 2003 - 11:53 am:

Classic, I hate to ruin your dreams, but . . . Route 66 ain't no more. Not in one whole ribbon getting you to California.

Any interest in Don Pedro Res. spillway east of Turlock? That thing should blow any day now, if my deciphering is right. Mt. Diablo sounds feasible, tho Golden Gate Pk. is also nice. What about the State Univ. canyon where the coeds were found?

I can bring peppermints. We can chew 'em and phomph them in each other's faces! That is, if I will be allowed to attend; I shall be a married man by July. It is hard to explain Zodiac to a wife from Colombia where there are thousands of Zodiac copycats "doing their thing."

By Scott Bullock (Scott_Bullock) ( - on Monday, January 13, 2003 - 12:06 pm:

J Eric:
You've got that right! Zodiac would have been eaten alive down there! Goodness, I certainly hope that you and your new bride will be living in the US? Personally, I think she'd make a welcome addition to the crowd. Perhaps she can offer an opinion or two on the virtues and vices of the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution. For what it is worth, I mean than absolutely and positively. Congratulations on the marriage! If it's anything like mine, you'll love it!

By Scott Bullock (Scott_Bullock) ( - on Monday, January 13, 2003 - 12:16 pm:

Why put the mileage on a 'classic' '63 'vette when you can put the damage on a rental instead? Trust me, the money you'll spend on a rental will start to pay dividends in consideration of mileage and headaches alone. In other words, you can rent a vehicle for less than the insurance deduction that you're likely to end up paying.

Hope that helps...

By Classic (Classic) ( - on Monday, January 13, 2003 - 02:00 pm:

J Eric, I realize 66 isn't in one piece anymore, but I would like to see what is left before that is gone too.

Scott, I built it to drive it. If it was all original, that would be a different story. I will drive it out 66 one day, just wasn't sure if this would be a good time with the meeeting and all. Thanks, Classic

By Warren (Warren) ( - on Monday, January 13, 2003 - 02:57 pm:

Classic - I don't know where you will be coming from but if possible, swing through Houston and pick me up. I'll drive, and we can reprise Hunter Thompson's road trip in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". I'll also get AAA to map a route that encompasses the best, ahem, gentlemens clubs along the way.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 01:26 am:

Classic, you better be there this time! However, keep in mind the July 4 date is not etched in stone. I'm still working on it...

I also want to get Doug, Jake and a few others out to the Bay Area. Come on, everyone: let's have some peer pressure!

By Classic (Classic) ( - on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 10:43 am:

I certainly can't refuse an invitation like that. Either Warren's or Tom's lol

Have any of the investigators expressed an interest in coming, Toschi, Narlow, etc?

How about some BEER pressure too???

By Sandy (Sandy) ( - on Tuesday, January 14, 2003 - 06:30 pm:

Scott, please tell Classic not to try and park on any SF sidewalks like you did! (LOL) I like the idea of MT.Diablo on a non Holiday in the summer time. It is very cold any other time. Z would like it better also!

By Muskogee (Muskogee) ( - on Thursday, January 16, 2003 - 10:40 am:

Tom, how about June? I'll be in the midst of moving, but I should be able to make it, unlike in July (since this whole event revolves around my attending it). LOL

By Howard Davis (Howard) ( - on Monday, January 20, 2003 - 12:22 pm:

By Muskogee (Muskogee) ( - on Monday, January 20, 2003 - 07:44 pm:

Hmmm, maybe a pompadour? Whadaya think, Tom?

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Wednesday, January 22, 2003 - 11:10 pm:

Well, the Presidio is out. What a rip off! Check this out:

"The standard filing fee for a special use permit is $260. The use fee is an additional $200 and the manager on duty will be billed @ $65/hr on a 4 hour minimum. A $500 refundable cleaning deposit is also required.

"There are no areas in the Presidio which have toilet facilities to accommodate this many people. You will be required to bring in two toilets one of which must be handicapped accessible. The rental fee for these will be around $200. Additionally, you will be required to provide a debris box and trash receptacles throughout the use area."

This event will be a challenge to organize. I'm awfully glad I started researching this months in advance!

By Carolyn (Carolyn) ( - on Thursday, January 23, 2003 - 01:03 am:

Is that for real?!! It's hilarious! Nothing like being a little "politically correct!" I have the feeling that the thought of having a group of zodiac followers using their facilities really gets their defenses up!

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) ( - on Thursday, January 23, 2003 - 01:18 am:

Carolyn, I didn't even tell them what the event would entail. I can only imagine the additional "taxes" us Zodiac followees would have to pay!

By J Eric (J_Eric) ( - on Thursday, January 23, 2003 - 01:33 am:

Tom, Los Angeles has a similar fee schedule in place for use of public property, except you also need to pay for a Fire Marshal. I learned this when we secessionists down here were trying to stage a Bar-B-Q in a San Fernando Valley park. We ended up renting a conference room in a hotel. Since it was private property, it was cheaper! (However, the combined political minds of all secessionists could not figure out how to roast hot dogs in a hotel room, so that merriment was cancelled.) Is there a private "conference center" in the vicinity of Mt. Diablo or the Presidio where we could meet & maybe then take a walking tour of the exact Presidio site? I don't think they can charge fees if people merely walk through a park....Alternate idea: try a different County, fee requirements are not uniform throughout the State.

By Ed N. (Ed_N) ( - on Thursday, January 23, 2003 - 02:21 am:

If we need one, I vote for Fire Marshall Bill.

By VSCANTU (Vscantu) ( - on Saturday, February 01, 2003 - 09:08 am:

ERIC J.: Fantastic suggestion about instead renting a nearby Conference room to bypass the Presidio's ridiculous fees & conditions. I'm sure most attendees wouldn't mind paying a nominal fee to help defray some of the costs.

By Tom Voigt (Admin) ( - on Saturday, August 23, 2003 - 04:38 pm:

Here's a link to pics of the event.
