Zodiackiller.com Message Board: Ciphers: Ham Radio

In analysing Zodiacs use of symbols within both main ciphers,I do note that in the 480
the only "straight letter" not used as a symbol is "C". In the 340
likewise the only letter not used is "Q".Appears strange that he would elect to
omit one letter of the alphabet in this way.(Both are used in reverse).Perhaps there is a connection! "CQ" is a signal used by radio amateurs, inviting others into communication.
What may also tie into this is the hidden morse symbols used ,especially in the 340 where we have dots, dashes and the dividing line "/" used in morse. There are many possible combinations depending on how the cipher is rotated.
Just a thought!

Rick Marshall was a HAM operator--still don't think it was him, but interesting coincidences.

It resonates with the Penn/O'Hare tango as well.

Marshall is so fascinating...I hope to actually interview him one day.

Lapumo, I don't know how significant your discovery is, but good job for sticking to it nonetheless.

Teletype paper. Z had access to Teletype paper (if in fact he wrote the CJB letter
which was supposedly on teletype paper...never have been able to confirm that
Graysmithism.) So did Marshall. An extremely "unique" clue if there ever was
one. As I have said before, you don't just go to Walmart to buy that stuff. You either
work in a radio station (as Marshall did), are a ham (as Marshall is/was), or are in the
military and are a radio man or electronics tech. Marshall was a ham operator in 1966.
I used that stuff when I was a radio officer in the merchant marine. I've never seen it since, anywhere.

On the other hand, Z could have pulled it out of a dumpster. Teletype paper, like everything else, periodically appears in dumpsters. My friends over at 2600.com have been known to rescue some pretty interesting stuff from dumpsters.

I think the Ham Radio idea is excellent. There are several makes of amateur radio
called Zodiac. A vintage one in fact was called the 'Faraday Zodiac'(Synch! David Farady
was one of Z's victims, possibly his first. Curious that Z opens some letters with
"This is the Zodiac speaking". Perhaps he sat in front of his Zodiac radio
looking at the logo right in front of him as he drafted his letters.

The Zodiac sitting in front of a Zodiac radio wearing a Zodiac watch and writing "This is the Zodiac speaking..." Then he would drive his Zodiac car to mail his letter. Way too weird.

ED. LOL :-) Good Imagery! Point taken, still think it interesting that he opens some of his letters "This is the Zodiac speaking". Maybe it was just for dramatic effect. I did a search but couldn't find a discussion around the use of this word.

Maybe he needed the "n" and the "k."

Actually, John, I wasn't kidding. I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised to find out that Z did do something like that (except for driving the Zodiac car, since he'd have to import one from England).

Douglas, Read your post on the 13 characcter cipher, neat, 'sets' out an interesting
argument, considering TK's background. (N,K ?)
Was TK ever into CB/Amateur radio?
ED, sorry, missed your point, with so many 'Z knowledgable' people posting, guess I was expecting to get 'flamed'. Maybe TK was right about Technology! If 'Z' was into CB/Amateur radio perhaps he's used his call sign in his ciphers/letters.

I am glad you guys brought that up! On most of the trucks and cars my suspect drives, he has a tall antena. Before I had a cell phone, I had a CB that I had to turn on to feel safe driving home from Oakland late at night. Some guy from Concord would talk to me for that 45min drive,as I was followed most of the time from 88-90. A few times this stalker would come on the CB his handle was "the Ripper".Once a Van had turnd over on Hy 4 Pittsburg the bodys were on the road.Myself and a Berkeley Farms driver spoke about the accident, the odd voice came on and said: I like to see body's!! He was behind me in a small brown truck.Other drivers came on and said something like:That guys joke is not funny! I told them he was not jokeing. If anyone reading this heard what was said that day,and can remember anything else. Please Post it,I am sure some of the people who read my post, think I am makeing up these story's because I have nothing better to do with my time.Believe me I have a lot to do.

Sandy, is it possible for you to post at this message board without including a bunch of info about these non-Zodiac related events you keep having? I mean, sorry about this stalker...but until you prove he is the Zodiac, it doesn't belong here.

John, so far as I'm aware, TK never got into amateur radio. However, it's not
impossible that in his youth he was involved. He had a great interest in electronics,
chemistry and practical science. His mother stated
"Much of his time is spent at home reading and contriving numerous
gadgets made up of wood, string, wire, tape, lenses, gears, wheels, etc.;
that test out various principals in physics. His table and desk are always
a mess of test tubes, chemicals, batteries, ground coal, etc. He will miss
greatly, I think, this browsing and puttering in his messy makeshift lab."
Radio might have been one of his interests; we simply don't have the information to confirm it.

Tom my stalker is a Z suspect with as many if not more witness's placeing him around Darlene in Vallejo than you can find with Art Allen. He also lived in S.F. when Stine was shot, and Lake Tahoe when Donna Lass was taken. He Also lived in LasVegas when Dana Lull was taken. He lived a few blocks from Spring Mt. Inn where Dana's boy friend saw him.He was in the Navy and knew code.Just because you don't think he is the Zodiac, dosen't prove that he is not. You may know a lot about Allen, but know one, not even you, is a Z expert. why don't we collect the money we need to prove that the blood on the book found in my car, with the Lake B costume in 69, is in fact the Lake B victims blood. If I am right I will lick the egg off your face at the next meeting. If I am wrong I will kiss your --- and never bother you again.

Sandy, do I go on and on about Allen? No. In fact, I rarely bring him up.
Believe whatever you want, however you do not need to turn every thread into a discussion about your experiences.
