Zodiackiller.com Message Board: Letters: Halloween Nite Letter ?

By Lapumo (Lapumo) (p164.as1.virginia1.eircom.net - 159.134.234.164) on Sunday, July 29, 2001 - 06:35 am:

I was watching a documentary on T.V last week
about the Zodiac case. One scene in the above showed a detective flicking through a folder containing the Zodiac letters and envelopes, contained in plastic covers.Right towards the end(for second or two)it showed a letter containing the words ON HALLOWEEN NITE.
This is all I could make out.Not being familiar with this I posted here on the board.Luckily,I was contacted over the weekend by a person(whom I'd like to thank)who had actually taped the show.
He sent me on stills from the programme and from them he was able to transcribe the following letter apparently posted to the Vallejo Times Herald(have not ben able to determine the exact date).
The letter is as follows:-
This is the Zodiac speaking I am
crack proof.Tell Herb Caen that I am
still here.I have always been here.

Tell the blue pigs if want me I will
be out driving around on Halloween in
my death machine looking for some kiddies to
run over.Cars make nice weapons the
pigs can catch me if they find me
out there.Just like in the movie the car.
Tell the kiddies watch before
they cross the streets
on Halloween Nite.Tell toschi my new plans

Yours truly

Just checking on the movie ...The Car..
It was a 1977 horror movie starring James Brolin.
The Plot..A small town is terrorized by a fast black indestructible car...running people down and running other cars off the road."It's up to Sherrif Wade to stop it....only problem..there's no one behind the wheel!"
Tagline's for the movie include:-
Is it a phantom,a demon,or the Devil himself....
There's no where to run no where to hide,no way to stop....
What EVIL drives.....
Have not been able to determine the actual release date.

Lapuma,

I guess I was checking the same time you were.

It gives a few foreign release dates out there, but not a US date. The foreign dates are all in the fall of '77. US release dates usually are well before the foreign dates so I would guess that this could have been for Halloween of '77.

If the timing is correct, this means this letter came 6 months before the 78 "I am back with you letter".The similarities are obvious.I wonder if this was also considered a forgery?.The handwriting in this one is more "together" than the 78 one.I'll have to get it posted so people can make up there own minds.

It was a forgery, and not a good one. I have all of the articles regarding handwriting comparison.

Not only was the letter a hoax, it was mailed to the Vallejo Times-Herald in 1987. I don't know the precise date, but a photo of the letter was published along with Rider McDowell's story, "On the Trail of the Zodiac, Part Two," (The San Francisco Chronicle, This World, 5-15-1994, p. 12).

Some forgeries are good and others are bad-this one is fully the latter!Check out On The Trail ...as per sharp eyed ED and have a few laughs. What is even more funny they actually put it in the article!

Howard: at least they identified it as a forgery... unlike that 1971 letter...

This has been around for some time, and from my perspective the writing looks as if it's been traced from existing Zodiac samples.

Thanks Ed.The copy I had was unclear, from that perspective the handwriting looked better. It still does look better than the 78 letter though.

Thank you Ed. I remember when the '87 letter came out as I lived in the Bay Area at the time. They didn't show the letter but just reading the transcription in the paper, it sounded fake to me. Didn't have that Zodiac tone. More like a wanna be. Reminded me of the '78 letter, & now seeing it, I would say they're both from the same forger.

If you look at the letter it is obvious a forgery.
Most text you can find written exactly as in some of the real Zodiac-letters.

I agree with you Tony, the tone of this letter sounds about as menacing as Mr. Rogers! As long as we're talking about fake letters, for quite awhile I've wondered about the "Red Phantom" letter. The only similarity between it and the "genuine" letters are the y's and e's-the
rest bears absolutely no resemblance to them! I think even laymen can see that the slant isn't right, the capital letters are too "pretty" and there aren't any misspelled words. To me this letter doesn't look like any of the others, real or fake. -Mark
