I was over at the United States Copyright Office website, and decided to do a search on
holders of copyrights. I searched Gareth Penn, and came up with several Zodiac works other
than Times 17 and The Second Power. I don't know what they are, but their
titles are interesting (and insane sounding). Among the titles are:
Papers relating to the impending suicide of Michael Henry O'Hare on 17 May 1989 / by
Gareth Penn (created and copyrighted in 1988)
The Geometry of life and death: Resolution of the Zodiac mystery on 19 September 1989
(created in 1989 and copyrighted 5 September 1989)
To read about them yourself, just click on the link below and run the search:

What weird, weird dude.

Can someone shed some light on this impending suicide of O'Hare?

By The way does anyone know where I can get a copy of Times 17 or The Second Power. My local bookstore could not order Times 17 since it was out of print. I've tried some online sources as well. Thanks.

obiwan: The second power is available straight from the source himself. However,
after all the BS regarding his lawsuit over Jake's free advertising for him, I rather
doubt he's selling it anymore. But, if you want to give it a try:
Gareth Penn
4990 Shoreline Highway
Stinson Beach, CA 94970
I don't know how much it's going for, if he's still selling it. Write first to find out.

I just wish I could hear what O'Hare has to say in regard to Penn's obsession with him. That second title is pretty d***ed creepy.

Unfortunately, the only way to get copies of any of the unpublished Z writings of Penn
that have been copyrighted is by getting written permission from the copyright holder.
I really want to read about "the impending suicide of Michael Henry O'Hare" and
the "resolution" of the Z case, both of which should have happened almost 13
years ago. Something tells me that Penn's "deciphering" of the binary codes in
Z's writings and killings didn't work as well as he thought.

Considering that O'Hare is still alive and kicking, I seriously doubt that Penn would let anyone read his earlier failed-prophetic works...

obiwan asked, "By The way does anyone know where I can get a copy of Times 17 or

I got my copy of Times 17 from Barnes and Noble, but that was over a year ago. You
might want to try Amazon.com or one of the online sources that specialize in finding out
of print titles. And I would check eBay every now and then.
I ordered my copy of The Second Power just before the whole "copyright"
thing erupted between Jake and Penn. I used the same address that was posted in this
thread. (It is even signed by the Zodiac, ooops, I mean, the author). I would definitely
write first before sending any money.

Another Z researcher once told me that Penn had prophesied that O'Hare was going to
kill himself by driving his car off of Point Reyes near San Francisco -- I guess this was
the 1989 prediction. Penn, of course, recieves his mail at the Point Reyes Bird
Observatory; I wonder if he got the job so he could be a first-responder?

Interesting Jake. Was he supposed to drive off the tip of Pt. Reyes, where the
lighthouse is? This would "make sense", because the very tip of Pt. Reyes is at
the "crosshairs" of latitude/longitude 123 W, 38N A similar point is the
crosshair encircled by Lake Tahoe at 120W,39N.
Hmmm...on my map it also looks like the tip of Pt. Reyes is roughly ONE RADIAN from
magnetic north, as measured from Mt Diablo...perhaps this it what got Penn interested in
Pt. Reyes.

Obiwan,
Interesting observation about LT.I believe Z did abduct Lass and sent the Pines card, but
this contraversial.More research needs to be done on the Lass case.As usual ,the
'authorities' arn't going anywhere. The equal sign used on the Pines card could, and I say
could,be taken from Crowleys writings and other occultists as they use the equal sign as
part of their indicators for rituals, etc. It can be in the form of a warning too.Incline
Village is,I am told a fairly wealthy area(this was mentioned on a show last week about a
possible Tahoe '87) and this lines up with PH and the Z strike there.I am reminded of
Manson who said that some of the 'random killings' should take place in wealthy areas(La
Bianca/Tate)in various cities. The'rich pigs' were to 'experience fear.'See my past
posts-and my site at:www.zodiacmurders.com,on the possible Z connection to the postcard
and Lass.Lass was the last name of a well known Polish actress. She was Roman Polanskis' ex
wife!Polanski was working in April of '69, on a screen play for Parmount with Ivan moffat
called The Donner Pass.It says these early pioneers were heading to a supposed
"paradise,"but instead ended up dying in the cold and by canibalizing each
other-the ol' Jeffery Dalmer syndrome!

Yesterday, I finally made an excellent copy of Penn's "Portrait of the Artist as a
Mass Murderer"; the Santa Rosa library has a hard copy of it as well as Vallejo's JFK
library.
As I read it again (first time in a few years), I was struck by some odd things: he's
described as "[a] writer and gentleman scholar" (cough, cough), and it
turns out that Penn's father was an army cryptographer, who had passed on to him knowledge
of "secret writing". He also makes many basic factual mistakes (possibly
forgivable, considering there was little in print at the time other than old newspaper
stories), and insists this early in his "investigative" career that Stine parked
his cab in front of a fire hydrant. As per typical Penn, he misconstrues Z in order to
make the facts fit his theory, such as, "In the letter accompanying the map, he
intimated that something interesting would be found by placing a radian angle on Mount
Diablo." Near the end of the piece, the pseudonym "George Oakes" is
described as "a pen name" (emphasis mine). I bet he thought that was
clever.
While searching the Santa Rosa Press Democrat for stories on Maureen Sterling and
Yvonne Weber (who RG thinks may be possible Z victims), I came across an interesting story
about the arrest of a man who was a "veteran of the Alcatraz Indian occupation and
the Kashia roadblock," who failed to show up for sentencing on November 16th, 1971.
The man's name was Richard George Oakes. I wonder if that is where Penn got his
"pen name?" (see "Richard Oakes Arrested," Santa Rosa Press
Democrat, 2-6-1972, p. 6A).

Ed,
Glad to hear that you got a good copy of Portrait. I, too, am puzzled by the
origins of the Oakes pseudonym.
