Zodiac movie now in production

Zodiackiller.com Message Board: Zodiac Media: Zodiac movie now in production

By Tom Voigt (Admin) (12-224-139-118.client.attbi.com - 12.224.139.118) on Tuesday, November 05, 2002 - 10:36 am:

From German-born director Ulli Lommel:

"I am delighted that you're on board. I believe we can do quite a lot for each other in connection with our current production "The Zodiac". The lead character is a 22-year-old man who has become so obsessed with the Zodiac, the he actually believes he is the Zodiac. He starts executing people just like his idol, until the real Zodiac, who hasn't killed anybody in 30 years, gets a hold of the copy cat. The rest is still a secret.

The film will be shot in English, and I will give you quotes from time to time throughout production to use on your website. We will be filming until December 21 (my birthday), and expect to be completed by the end of February.

I would like to shoot several scenes where the young and the old Zodiac check out your website for details regarding the 1969-71 murders, and I would feature in close-up some of the content. Also, in return for your permission to film some of the content of your website, I would like to
offer you one or several credits, maybe you have some ideas, if not, I'm happy to propose some. Certainly your name, the name of your website etc. should be featured prominently among the film's credits to ensure maximum awareness level and PR. I will also send you one of the first video copies once the film is completed (scheduled for approx. February 25, 2003).

Please understand that by granting us the right to film contents of your website, you also grant us the right to use it as part of the film and its exploitaion in all media world-wide. Let me know if you have any other requests or ideas.
"

Ulli Lommel? Awesome!

I'm a huge fan of 2 of his movies, The Boogeyman, and The Devonsville Terror!

Tom, this guy is for real, no BS filmmaker here. This is huge! Congratulations my friend!

By Scott Bullock (Scott_Bullock) (cache-ntc-af07.proxy.aol.com - 198.81.26.172) on Tuesday, November 05, 2002 - 02:38 pm:

Oh yeah, let's not forget Cocaine Cowboys and The Tenderness of Wolves! I truly enjoy Ulli's films, I really do!

By Ed N. (Ed_N) (acac060a.ipt.aol.com - 172.172.6.10) on Tuesday, November 05, 2002 - 02:45 pm:

It's good that after all the footdragging, hemming and hawing, bellyaching and complaining, etc, etc, etc... someone, after the previous effort in 1971 (not Dirty Harry, but rather, the absolutely terrible The Zodiac Killer), is finally doing something!!! Yayy!!!

P.S. I hope they'll do some flashbacks of Z reminiscing about the original crimes, perhaps some of the investigation, etc...

Julia Roberts for Dr. Hottie.
Anna Nicole Smith for Mt. Diablo.
I can play Paul Stine's bloody shirt.
Congratulations Tom!

Now that I think about it, The Limbic Region was a pretty good, if very thinly disguised, effort...

If you want an idea, how about the young Zodiac fantasizes at a picture of the Oct/13/69 wanted poster on his wall, and the composite slowly morph's into young Zodiac's face.

And one more,
Zsa Zsa Gabor as Sandy.

By Howard Davis (Howard) (dsl-gte-19167.linkline.com - 64.30.222.109) on Tuesday, November 05, 2002 - 03:35 pm:

Congrats'Tom!Somehow I am not too surprised though-I am more surprised it took so long!
How about both Zs meeting Ed N and he gives them detailed fresh material reminding the old Z how and where he did his Thing and how that walkie talkies can improve their lot!

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) (pdx-cfi-90.navi.net - 208.211.19.90) on Tuesday, November 05, 2002 - 04:01 pm:

Thanks, everyone. However, since there has already been a rather silly thread regarding the cast of a ficticious Zodiac movie, maybe we can play it straight this time?

By Oddball (Oddball) (pcp02495134pcs.flrnc01.al.comcast.net - 68.62.174.236) on Tuesday, November 05, 2002 - 10:06 pm:

"The Boogeyman" was a fine, eerie piece of work(just wish there had been more of John Carradine), so I'm sure Mr. Lommel could do a nifty Zodiac film as well.

By Zander Kite (Zk) (gsa-24-197-136-36.sc.charter.com - 24.197.136.36) on Tuesday, November 05, 2002 - 10:40 pm:

In a bit of zynchronicity, "The Boogeyman" was the first movie I ever saw in the theatre. The mirror scenes were unsettling.

By Nick (Nick) (216.52.215.232) on Tuesday, November 05, 2002 - 11:25 pm:

Congratulations on the exposure. I see your getting a lot of that lately and it's well deserved.

By Scott Bullock (Scott_Bullock) (cache-ntc-af07.proxy.aol.com - 198.81.26.172) on Wednesday, November 06, 2002 - 08:32 am:

In The Boogeyman, there is a nifty sequence that is eerily reminiscent of the Lake Berryessa murders, though I doubt it is a direct reference. It takes place during the daytime, involves a lake, young couples in love, and sharp instruments being used for something other than what they were intended.

An idea would be to have Jr Zodiac crack one of Sr's undeciphered codes. Then from that point Jr and Sr communicate with this cipher through the newspapers.

Or on the MB. Like in the thread purportedly trying to break the 340.

And duplicate his handwriting. Or find Paul Stines shirt or wallet at a thrift store. Or figure out the radian puzzle. Something only I and the police know to lead investigators to think Z was back. Better motive for the real Z than mere imitation.

How about a zoom in on the young and old Zodiac's faces (as in Moench's "The Scream")as they try to decipher Penn's "Times 17"?

Tom have you considered maybe having a raffle, or an ebay auction in which the winner gets to have his user name displayed on the site when they show this site in the film? I don't think it would be a big deal for the film makers do you?

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) (12-224-139-118.client.attbi.com - 12.224.139.118) on Sunday, November 10, 2002 - 12:31 am:

By TheBlackJet (Theblackjet) (cache-mtc-ak04.proxy.aol.com - 64.12.96.201) on Sunday, November 10, 2002 - 12:34 am:

On the actual film, if it were up to me I'd shoot the entire film after dark, with no day light scenes, and I'd never show the original Zodiac's true face in the film. If his face had to be shown at all it wouuld be with the "hood" on or he would be wearing glasses, fake beards, wigs, etc. so that you were never shown his true face.

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) (12-224-139-118.client.attbi.com - 12.224.139.118) on Sunday, November 10, 2002 - 12:39 am:

Since the case is still such a mystery I think that would be fitting.

By Muskogee (Muskogee) (216-19-219-89.getnet.net - 216.19.219.89) on Sunday, November 10, 2002 - 10:12 am:

Blackjet, a problem with your suggestion is that we don't know that the movie even involves the message board (I would assume it probably does not), but rather uses the site as a source of reference (ie the "Victims" pages) for the "new" Zodiac to research. Even if the message board were used, there is a lot of editing that is done which Tom and the director have no control over. Therefore there would be a good chance a user's name would be edited out anyway. I like your idea to have an auction as a fundraiser for Tom's research...

By Tom Voigt (Tom_Voigt) (12-224-139-118.client.attbi.com - 12.224.139.118) on Sunday, November 10, 2002 - 11:55 am:

"I like your idea to have an auction as a fundraiser for Tom's research..."

There's already a link at the News Center for anyone who wants to do such a thing.

Regarding Ulli's film, as far as I know they won't venture to the message board...but who knows?

"I'd shoot the entire film after dark"

What? And deprive Z Jr. of a shot at LB?

I think Z and Z Jr. should stalk each other through the MB. And both show up at the Task Force meet.

By Nick (Nick) (216.52.215.232) on Monday, November 11, 2002 - 11:46 pm:

It had to be "Last House On the Left". I remember the trailer "To avoid fainting, keep repeating, it's only a movie, it's only a movie". That movie gave me nightmares as a teen. Wes Craven had a knack for that.

I can see Ulli editing in a chat room scene. Something like this. Z_JR: "anyone out there". Z_SR: "this is the zodiac speaking." Z_JR: "that you Jake?" Z_SR: "Ha..Ha.. you have been chosen my son"...........

Oddball and Nick nailed it on the head; Last House on the Left is the correct answer.

This film launched the career of genre giants Wes Craven and Sean S. Cunningham; both had been working in the porn industry prior to making this film.

Thanks Tom, in more ways than one!

For those of you out there who are wondering to yourselves, "Why that jerk?" bear in mind that I also bring 12 years of film industry experience to the table. Also, my contributions are more creative than they are technical, so it's not as if I'm being asked to provide the skills of a detective or criminologist. If that were the case, I'd most certainly defer my position to Det. Baker or Mike Kelleher. FYI.

Tom ,please don't tell us that you are going to have Allen restuffed for the movie! It would be great if some of the movie money could go towards more DNA checking of suspects, also other letters believed to be Zodiacs like the ones I have collected over the years and the ones Pam has recieved as well. Maybe the book with perhaps the LB victims blood on it, that was found along with his LB costume could be checked ? We could cut to the chase if it was proven to be the LB victims blood! I would like to prove that I am not a liar or a nut case, proving that, we we can get through the forrest to that tree we have been blind to. It's true I could be a nut case, not too many people let alone a older woman would have a car chase with a stalker who just happend's to be a Z suspect!!
