Z-list update...

Zodiackiller.com Message Board: Zodiac Media: Z-list update...

By Ed N. (spider-tq051.proxy.aol.com - on Monday, September 11, 2000 - 05:08 pm:

I just added a couple more entries to Zodiac Publications: The A to Z Encyclopedia of Serial Killers (1996) and The Mammoth Book of Unsolved Crimes (1999). What really gets me is that The Mammoth Book was published only last year, and, in the short 14 pages dedicated to Z, there are enough errors to make even Graysmith & Penn proud! I had thought that the last few years has brought about an explosion of accurate Z-material, but it seems not everyone is keeping up-to-date with it. In any case, the references are there for anyone who wishes to read more about Z, especially those new to the case.

EdN.-My correction didn't come out-forgive these poor ol' posts of mine ,bear with me ,I'm still new to computers, etc.!Also, do you have or can you get any info on the story that a man gave to the SF Chronicle in 1970 about an event that he witnessed in Berkeley on Telegraph av. in 1968 ?I know Davis was there in Dec. of that year, but the story he tells is very much like the Bates case. He says that he came upon a man pushing a V.W. owned by 2 young girls and when the man offered to help the stranger push the car but he went off very angry! The girls then told the man that the man that stormed off had offered them a lift earlier ,but they told him they had a car.Later, after thay had eaten lunch, they went to start the car and it wouldn't start. The stranger then appeared and offered to help get the car going so he began pushing the car and the 'new 'man came up and the stranger left. The man looked under the rear hood and found that the distributer wires had been pulled out!I can't get to the reference as I need to go through my boxes to find it.The Chronicle said that Berkeley PD was checking through their files for this event and this is all I have. If you live in that area it would be a great project. Did the 2 girls give a description of the stranger or were they ever located?

Howard, thanks for the info! I had forgotten you mentioned them in your book, otherwise, they wouldn't have been such a surprise when I found them in the paper. As far as the Berkeley story goes, that's about all I know as well, I never found any 1968 stories (if there were any), and since the Chronicle apparently didn't start publishing indexes until about 1976, it won't be easy to find.

EdN.-I found the reference in the Chronicle. It's the 11/19/70 edition. The article says that the Berkeley man said the incident happened "about 2 years ago"-68.The man seen pushing the car was "between 25 and 40 he guessed". When the Berkeley man approached to help the stranger "became, obviously enraged at the intrusion and stormed off".

The article further says that "An examination of the engine showed the distributer had been ripped off.(This is the method Miss Bates' killer used to sabotage her car)."

The Berkeley police were "searching their files"...to check on the incident... It is believed that report may contain the license plate number of the stranger's car".

I am working with BPD and they are looking for the report.Maybe the Chronicle has files on this interview with that "Berkeley man".When I get some funds, I will do an ad in the papers there in hopes of someone ,that either knew the man, or the man himself -seeing the story. The indication is that the man filed a report with the BPD.I wish he was a poster!Anyone live in Berkeley that could use some homework?I will write the papers to see if they will do a story on this very important"curious incident."

We don't live in Berkeley, however we have some very good connections with Berkeley P.D. should you run into a wall or need any other doors opened. My husband is an ex-BPD officer and we remain in contact with some of the guys that he used to work with. Wish we had known this when he was still there as he has always been interested in this case.

Kc-Any help I can get on this would be appreciated. I am not doing this in a corner to make some big discovery or I would not have posted.I am certain some record exists and maybe a local newspaper did a story on it. I am contacting the Chronicle to see if they have anything in their records or if they can do a story on that "incident".Supposedly, there was some kind of a report on this incident ,as it was highly suspicious ,so your husband may render help on the Zodiac case!My E is antaresresearch@hotmail.com

Kc, would you ask your husband if he can find J Ford for me ? He worked at BPD,and was with me one of the nights I was followed, by a man who turned out to be a Z suspect. He offered to help me catch the man who was following me almost every night in Oakland. J sat down low in my car, so the man would think I was alone. When the man's car came up to my bumper, J Ford sat up,then that car made a u turn! I wanted to chase it and get a plate number, but J said to pull over, and see if the guy would return. I was sure he wouldn't, because he didn't want any witness's. He also knew I had a lot of friends in law enforcement, for sure he wouldn't take a chance like that! The other Berkeley police officer who had an encounter with this guy was T. Gully on his boat at 3am,on his Birthday Jan. 90 !

Sandy, sure I will ask, I'm a little confused though, what year did the incident with the suspect and J. Ford occur, and are you saying that the Z suspect had an encounter with a BPD officer on the officers boat in 1990? Maybe a few more details would help. My husband was with the department from 80-85, however does still have friends and contacts there. We also have a close friend, who was an Oakland officer during the 70's, he is now a private investigator and may have information if reports were taken in Oakland?
Was this Ford assigned to your case or just helping you as a friend?

By Sandy (Sandy) (c531918-a.ptbrg1.sfba.home.com - on Monday, February 12, 2001 - 09:50 pm:

He was helping me as a friend. The year would be 88 or 89. T Gully worked for Oakland PD before he went to BPD,he and J ford are friends. I know Gully was not working at that time. And yes the z suspect was wiping down a boat next to Gully's at am in January! Gully shook his hand, asked him if he would like to join them on his boat. Z suspect said yes,on the boat were two or three of Gully's friends. They all thought the man was very strange, he didn't make a lot of sense.Gully told me, the man was a partner with 3 others on the boat next to his. I slept on Gully's boat many times, when it was too foggy to drive home. The other thing he said was that he worked for Safeway. Earlier the year before, a girls body was found in a gully, near a Safeway sign, not far from my home. She was a waitress at the "Renascence" bar in Walnut "Creek" Ca. Gully seemed fearful when he left the message on my recorder, some time after 3 that morning.I returned his call but he didn't answer.I kept trying until 6am. I called the Alameda police and told them what happened, they went to his boat and woke him up. In Aug. of 90 I sent Gully a picture of the suspect, who by now had hair. He said he never got it! Shortly after, a picture just like that one, was sent to me in another envelope. No return address, I don't think it had more than one stamp. It was sent from Oakland, the envelope was the same size as the picture exactly.

Howard-husband says that he is not sure the BPD microfiche files go back that far, and many pre-micofiche were destroyed, however he will call the powers that be there and see what they can pull out or up. Will let you know.

I didn't want to start a new thread for this, but some of you might be interested: someone at eBay is selling CD-Roms of the APB files for $9. Search for "Zodiac Killer" -- it looks like he's burned a few of them.
